As we strive to keep our eco-system in tact; and keep our rainforests from being destroyed; as a practical matter, there is more we can do on an individual basis. Teaching your kids the importance of Earth Day is the first step, as they will be our legacy and the caretakers of our planet in years to come. It is important to explain to your kids what Earth Day represents, and what you do as a family; not just one day, but every day can keep the environment free from further damage.

How can I teach my kids about Earth Day?

Start by explaining what Earth Day represents and that caring for the planet is something your family does every day, not just on April 22nd. From there, involve your kids in simple, hands-on actions together — like planting a tree, recycling, or making posters about protecting the environment. Children learn best when they’re part of the doing.

What activities can families do for Earth Day?

This article offers a whole list of easy ideas: plant a tree, recycle as much as you can, walk or bike to school when it’s age-appropriate, keep lights off when you’re not using them, conserve water by not running the tap while brushing teeth and taking shorter showers, use reusable grocery bags, help clean up a local park, grow plants and herbs, or build a birdhouse in your backyard.

Why is it important to teach kids about Earth Day?

Because, as the article puts it, our children will be the caretakers of this planet in the years to come. Teaching them is the first step. And if everyone took the time to put just one of these simple suggestions into practice, we really could help preserve this precious earth for our kids and the generations that follow.

When is Earth Day?

Earth Day is celebrated on April 22nd each year. That said, the heart of this article is that protecting the environment shouldn’t be a one-day event — the habits you build as a family, from recycling to conserving water, matter most when you keep them up every day.
