Boinayel
Boinayel Pronunciation
Boinayel is pronounced boh-ee-nah-YEL
Meaning: son of the serpent; deity of rain and water in Taino mythology
History & Origin
Boinayel and twin Márohu are Taino weather zemis (spirit-deities), first recorded by Fray Ramón Pané in 1495–96 — the oldest surviving eyewitness account of Caribbean Indigenous belief. Their mother is Iguanaboina, a mottled grey serpent who gathers rain into clouds; Boinayel brings the life-giving wet season while Márohu clears the sky. Together they governed the agricultural cycle that sustained Taino communities. A carved cave stalagmite in Cuba, the Idol of Patana, is identified by scholars as a representation of Boinayel, oriented to mark the rainy season's arrival.
