Marohu Pronunciation
Marohu is pronounced mah-ROH-hoo
Meaning: spirit of the cloudless sky; a deity of clear weather in Taino mythology
History & Origin
Marohu is a Taino name from the Arawakan language of the pre-Columbian Caribbean, attested in the sacred mythology of the Taino people — the Indigenous people of Puerto Rico, Cuba, Hispaniola, Jamaica, and the Bahamas at the time of European contact. The Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian Magazine has published documentation of Taino deities including Marohu, and the TV Tropes Taino Mythology article draws on documented Taino cosmological sources. In Taino mythology, Marohu is one of a pair of twin deities — the other being Boinayel, the rain god. Their mother is Iguanaboina, a mottled gray serpent who gathers the tropical rains that sustain Caribbean agriculture. The twins live together in her cave: Boinayel governs rainfall and the nourishment of crops, while Marohu governs the cloudless sky, dry weather, and sunlight. Their balance — rain and sun in right proportion — determines whether the season's harvest will succeed or fail. In Taino spiritual practice, the twins were invoked as zemis — sacred beings embodied in material objects such as carved wooden or stone figures. When the community needed rain, they visited the zemis of Boinayel and Marohu. When they needed fair weather and the end of storms, they approached the same figures. The two were understood not as opposites in conflict but as complementary forces whose cooperation sustained life. The name Marohu carries this cosmic responsibility: the one who holds open the sky, who clears the clouds so the sun can do its work, whose presence makes growth possible alongside the rain his twin provides.
