History & Origin

Deminán is the name of the eldest of the four Caracaracol brothers in Taino creation mythology, documented by Fray Ramón Pané in 1495–96 — the only eyewitness account of Taino cosmology. His mother Itiba Cahubaba (Earth Mother) died giving birth to the quadruplets; their father cut open her body to deliver them. Deminán alone bore the caracaracol condition (meaning mangy or scabby in Taino) and led the brothers in stealing cassava and cohoba snuff from the elder Bayamanaco. A swelling on Deminán's back was opened with a stone axe, releasing a turtle who became the mother of humanity. The brothers also accidentally dropped the bones of Yayael, causing a great flood that formed the Caribbean Sea. A Taino zemí representing Deminán Caracaracol is held in the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian.

Did you know? According to Pané's 1495 account, Deminán bore a skin condition called caracaracol (meaning scabby or mangy) — and when the elder Bayamanaco spat cohoba snuff on his back, the resulting swelling was cut open by his brothers, releasing a live female turtle from whom all humanity descended.
Ramón Pané — An Account of the Antiquities of the Indians (Duke UP, 1999) — Primary source: caracaracol = mangy/scabby confirmed by Pané directly; only eyewitness Taino creation accountA Hero's Predicament — NMAI Magazine (Smithsonian) — Documents Deminán Caracaracol zemí in the NMAI Infinity of Nations collection
