History & Origin
Joelyn is a twentieth-century American coinage that takes the biblical Jo- of Joel and Joelle - Hebrew for 'Yahweh is God' - and finishes it with the era's favourite feminine ending, -lyn. Some families used it as a relaxed respelling of Jocelyn instead, but the Jo- sound is what most parents heard first.
Never widespread, Joelyn appeared only a few dozen times a year, with a soft high point around 1951 before thinning out; it lingered on the records in tiny numbers into the twenty-first century. That arc makes it a mother-and-grandmother name today.
