Higüamota Pronunciation
Higüamota is pronounced hee-gwah-MOH-tah
Meaning: meaning uncertain
History & Origin
Higüamota (also spelled Higüemota) is documented in early colonial sources as the daughter of two of the most renowned figures in Taino history: Anacaona, the cacica (female chief), poet, and composer of Xaragua on Hispaniola, and Caonabo, cacique of Maguana. Their union was a political marriage joining two powerful Taino kingdoms. Higüamota and her nephew survived the 1503 Spanish attack on Xaragua, ordered by governor Nicolás de Ovando, that destroyed Anacaona's court; Anacaona was executed around 1504. Higüamota's own dates are lost to history. The literal meaning of the name in the Arawakan Taino language is not securely reconstructed, but the bearer is well attested in the colonial record.
