Guanina
Guanina Pronunciation
Guanina is pronounced gwah-NEE-nah
Meaning: bright; shining one
History & Origin
Guanina was a Taino princess in Puerto Rico (Borikén), sister of the paramount chief Guaybana. Her name is likely connected to guanín, the sacred Taino alloy of gold, silver, and copper used in chiefly medallions and prized for its warm, luminous glow — an 'aesthetic of brilliance' documented by scholars of Taino material culture. She fell in love with Spanish officer Don Cristóbal de Sotomayor and warned him of a planned ambush in 1511. He was killed; Guanina was found dead beside her lover's body, and both were said to be buried under a ceiba tree. The story, preserved in Puerto Rican chronicles since Cayetano Coll y Toste, is one of the island's most retold historical legends and places Guanina at the threshold of the 1511 Taino uprising.
