Anacaona
Anacaona Pronunciation
Anacaona is pronounced ah-nah-kah-OH-nah
Meaning: golden flower
History & Origin
Anacaona means golden flower in Taino, the Arawakan language of the pre-Columbian Caribbean, from ana (flower) and caona (gold) — the same gold root found in the name Caonabó, her husband. She was cacique of Xaraguá, the westernmost province of Hispaniola (present-day Haiti), celebrated for composing areytos: ceremonial songs combining poetry, narrative, and dance. Spanish Governor Nicolás de Ovando arrested her in 1503 under the pretext of a peaceful visit and had her publicly hanged. Las Casas, Peter Martyr, and Oviedo all documented her. Her name endures as a symbol of Taino resistance and artistic excellence.
