Gouyen Pronunciation
Gouyen is pronounced GOO-yen
Meaning: wise woman
History & Origin
Gouyen (Apache Góyą́ń, also Goyán) is a Chiricahua Apache name meaning the one who is wise or wise woman, confirmed by the Fort Sill Apache Tribe's own historian. Born around 1857 into the Chihenne (Warm Springs) band and aligned with Chief Victorio, Gouyen became known for an act of singular courage: after Comanche raiders killed her first husband, she tracked the responsible chief, infiltrated his camp during a celebration, and killed him. She survived the catastrophic Battle of Tres Castillos in 1880, in which Victorio and some 78 warriors died, escaping with her young son James Kaywaykla — whose memoirs became a valuable historical record. She later married warrior Kaytennae and was captured with Geronimo's band in 1886, dying at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, in 1903.
