Dahteste Pronunciation
Dahteste is pronounced dah-TES-tay
Meaning: meaning uncertain
History & Origin
Dahteste (also Tahdeste) was a Chokonen Chiricahua Apache woman, born around 1860, whose sister married Chief Chihuahua. Fluent in English, she rode in raiding parties and fought alongside both Geronimo and the warrior-prophet Lozen. Her bilingual ability made her an invaluable messenger and interpreter during the 1886 negotiations for Geronimo's surrender to the U.S. military. She was subsequently imprisoned for eight years at Fort Marion in St. Augustine, Florida — surviving pneumonia and tuberculosis — and then held for nineteen more years at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. She was eventually allowed to join the Mescalero Apache at Whitetail, New Mexico, and died around 1955 at approximately 94. The precise meaning of her name is not recorded in any surviving authoritative source.
