History & Origin
Virgie as a female pet name comes from Virginia, but the handful of boys who carried it were almost certainly short Virgils. Virgil itself descends from the Roman Vergilius, remembered above all for the poet who wrote the Aeneid.
On the male side Virgie was genuinely rare and a little unexpected, drawing only a couple dozen boys a year even at its high around 1927 and fading after mid-century. A boy given it then would belong to a great-grandfather's generation; the cross-sex use makes it rarer still.
