History & Origin
Vergia is a by-ear variant of Virgie (or Vergie), the pet form of Virginia, from Latin 'virgo', maiden. Virginia was hugely popular in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and its short forms were often given outright and spelled freely - Vergia among them. Its use clusters in the early twentieth century.
Vergia was never common as a spelling in the United States, reaching only about twenty girls a year around its high point in 1925 while Virginia and Virgie carried the bulk of the name. A girl named Vergia then would be a great-grandmother today.
