Thayendanegea
Thayendanegea Pronunciation
Thayendanegea is pronounced thay-en-dah-NEH-geh-ah
Meaning: two sticks of wood bound together
History & Origin
Thayendanegea is a Kanyen'keha name whose most widely cited translation is 'two sticks of wood bound together' — strength through union. Scholars at the Dictionary of Canadian Biography also record 'he places two bets together,' a reference to Haudenosaunee wagering custom in which parties bound pledges physically. Both translations share the concept of two things joined. The name was borne by Joseph Brant (c.1742–1807), Wolf Clan Mohawk, who attended school in Connecticut, served as an interpreter and translator (helping render the Gospel of Mark into Mohawk), and during the American Revolution united four Iroquois nations in alliance with the British Crown. After the Revolution he secured the Grand River land grant for Iroquois Loyalists; the city of Brantford, Ontario, is named for him.
