Tamsin grew out of Thomasin and Thomasina, the medieval feminine forms of Thomas, whose root is the Aramaic te'oma, 'twin.' Cornwall and the West Country trimmed it down, and the short form stuck; it has been in continuous use in Britain since the sixteenth century and remains a British favorite. In the U.S. it is a rare and stylish import (said 'TAM-zin').
