History & Origin
Shireen comes from Persian shirin, 'sweet; pleasant'. Its fame rests on Khosrow and Shirin, Nizami's twelfth-century retelling of one of the great love stories of Persian literature, in which Shirin is the Armenian princess loved by the Sasanian king. The name is used across Iran, Central and South Asia, and the -een spelling is the common English one (said 'shih-REEN').
In the U.S. it appears only rarely for girls. Rare, romantic, and long-loved.
