History & Origin
Shequila is an American coinage joining the She- prefix to a -quila ending shared with Shakila and Shaquilla. Such names spread among Black American families from the mid-1970s, each spelling a personal invention. Shequila first appears in United States birth records around 1976 and touched a small high around 1988.
It was never common, given to only a couple dozen girls a year even at its peak, and faded by the mid-1990s. A Shequila from that high would be in her late thirties now.
