Shamyra

History & Origin

Shamyra is a coinage built on the prolific Sha- prefix that generated names like Shanice, Shakira and Shamika. Its second half leans toward Myra — a name coined by a seventeenth-century poet — and toward the Arabic-derived Amira, 'princess', giving Shamyra a soft, elevated ring. Like most names of this pattern it was composed for beauty of sound rather than assembled from a dictionary root.

Shamyra appears in the U.S. record from the mid-1970s and reached its small peak in 2007, later than many Sha- names, before easing off within a decade. A girl named Shamyra at that peak is now in her late teens. It remains a rare, elegant coinage tied to a specific naming culture and moment, not a traditional name with a documented history.
