Sendy

History & Origin

Sendy is a phonetic form that echoes both Sandy and Cindy, the mid-century pet names for Sandra, Alexandra and Cynthia. Because it splits the difference, its meaning follows the parent a family favors, whether the moon goddess sense of Cynthia or the defender sense behind Sandra. Sendy appears in United States birth records in the later twentieth century, with a small high around nineteen-ninety, and is also found as an independent name in Haitian French usage.

It never became common, given to only a couple dozen girls a year at its peak, so a Sendy from then would be in her thirties today. It reads as a modern, informal coinage rather than a revival, distinct enough that people often ask which fuller name lies behind it.
