Sargon of Akkad, who came to power around 2334 BC, forged one of the earliest empires in Mesopotamia; the name was later taken up by Assyrian kings, among them Sargon II. It survives as a given name among Assyrian Christian families, who keep the ancient heritage alive (said 'SAR-gon').
