History & Origin

Rayetta is a twentieth-century American coinage, built by adding the ornamental -etta ending to Ray. The suffix, borrowed from Italian and French diminutives, was fashionable for feminizing plain roots, and Rayetta is one such invention.

It never became common, given to only a couple dozen girls a year at its mid-century high and largely gone by the 1990s. A Rayetta from that time would be a grandmother today, and the name carries the frilly, homemade charm typical of its -etta cousins.

Did you know? Rayetta belongs to a whole family of -etta names, alongside Loretta and Henrietta, that turned short men's names into ornate girls' names.
