History & Origin
Olesya is a Ukrainian name, originally a warm short form of Oleksandra — the Ukrainian Alexandra, from the Greek Alexandros, 'defender of the people'. Like many Slavic pet forms it hardened into a full given name, and it is well used in Ukraine and Russia. It carries a literary shimmer too, through Kuprin's novella Olesya. Soft-edged and unmistakably Slavic (said 'oh-LEH-syuh').
In the U.S. it appears only rarely. Rare here, familiar in Ukraine and Russia.
