History & Origin
Mirela is a Romanian and Croatian form of Mirella and Mireille. The family is generally traced to the Provencal Mireio, the heroine of Frederic Mistral's celebrated poem, and behind that to the Latin mirari, 'to wonder at, to admire' - the root of miracle and admire alike. In Slavic-speaking countries the name is sometimes attached instead to mir, 'peace, world,' and we give that alternative honestly rather than settling it (said 'mee-REL-uh').
It appears only in very small numbers in the U.S. Rare, graceful, and European.
