Menewa Pronunciation
Menewa is pronounced meh-NAY-wah
Meaning: great warrior
History & Origin
Menewa is documented in early 19th-century Muscogee and U.S. records as the leadership name of an Upper Creek chief of Oakfuskee on the Tallapoosa River in present-day Alabama. Born Hothlepoya (meaning Crazy Trouble Hunter), he received the name Menewa — great warrior in Mvskoke — upon becoming chief. He commanded Red Sticks warriors at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend in 1814 and later enforced Creek sovereignty in 1825 by executing William McIntosh, who had sold Creek land without the National Council's consent.
