History & Origin
Margene is a coined blend that fuses Margaret, or its nickname Marge, with the -gene sound of Jean. Margaret descends from Greek margarites, 'pearl,' and Jean from Hebrew Yohanan, 'God is gracious' — Margene leans on the Margaret side for its meaning. Such fused names were fashionable in mid-twentieth-century America, when parents liked to combine two familiar favorites.
Unusually for its neighbors, Margene crested a little later, around 1951, and stayed uncommon, borne by roughly seventeen hundred girls before fading by the late 1970s. A Margene named at the peak is now in her seventies, a grandmother-era name. It has not revived and reads as a mid-century American blend.
