Kuarahy

History & Origin

Kuarahy is the Guaraní word for sun and one of the most culturally resonant names in the tradition of Paraguay and neighboring regions of Brazil and Argentina where the Guaraní language is spoken. In Guaraní cosmology, Kuarahy is not merely the sun but a divine creative being — the son of Tupã, the supreme god of thunder and creation, and a deity who alongside his twin Jasy (the moon) shaped the world that humans live in. This mythological depth transforms Kuarahy from a nature name into a name that connects the bearer to the act of creation itself. Guaraní is one of the few Indigenous languages in the Americas to achieve official status alongside a European language in a modern nation-state: it is co-official with Spanish in Paraguay, where an estimated 90% of the population speaks it.
