History & Origin

Jamesetta turns the classic James into a girl's name with the -etta ending, in the same spirit as Henrietta and Antonietta. It appears in United States records from about 1924 and reached its small high around 1950. It was never common, given to only a couple dozen girls a year even at its peak.

The name owes much of its recognition to Jamesetta Hawkins, the rhythm-and-blues singer who became Etta James. Even so it stayed rare, a distinctly mid-century feminization of James; a Jamesetta from its peak would be a grandmother now, and the name has not returned to wider use.

Did you know? The great singer Etta James was born Jamesetta Hawkins - she simply lifted 'Etta' out of the middle of her given name for the stage.
