Hayuya (born around the 1470s) was a Taino cacique who ruled a region in the interior central mountains of Puerto Rico, the area that now bears his name as the town of Jayuya. According to the colonial Chronicles of the Indies held in Seville, his was one of the more powerful cacicazgos on the island, all of which answered to the supreme cacique Agüeybaná. The mountainous district he governed is regarded as a heartland of Taino culture in Puerto Rico, and Jayuya is known today as 'La Capital Indígena' (the Indigenous Capital) for its many Taino sites and petroglyphs. The original meaning of the personal name in the Arawakan Taino language is not securely documented, but the cacique and the place named for him are well attested.
