History & Origin

Floyde carries the meaning of Floyd, the English form of the Welsh Llwyd, 'gray' or 'gray-haired.' It began as a Welsh surname and crossed into American use as a given name in the late nineteenth century. This -e spelling surfaced in the early 1900s, drifted along at only about fifteen boys a year at its best around the mid-1920s, and had faded by the 1960s.

A boy named Floyde at its peak would be pushing a hundred today, firmly a great-grandfather-era name. It was never common in any spelling of the extra -e; plain Floyd carried nearly all the traffic.

Did you know? The odd Welsh sound at the start of Llwyd was so hard for English speakers that the name got respelled as Floyd, and then a handful of families added a final -e to make Floyde.
