History & Origin

Eulah is a turn-of-the-century American spelling of Eula, the clipped form of biblical Beulah, Hebrew for 'married'. The eu- opening also echoes the Greek for 'good', which colored its appeal. Especially common in the South, it appears in U.S. records from the eighteen-eighties and crested around 1915 at just over sixty girls a year.

Eulah faded through the mid-twentieth century and had largely vanished by the nineteen-sixties. A soft two-beat name, it reads today as a distinctly antique, rural-American choice; it has not been part of the recent vintage revival in this spelling.

Did you know? Eulah and Eula both trace back to Beulah, a name lifted straight from the King James Bible, where 'Beulah' is applied to a restored land.
