History & Origin
Eliakim is Hebrew for 'God raises up' or 'God establishes', borne by several biblical figures — most memorably Hezekiah's palace steward, elevated in Isaiah 22 to carry the Davidic key, and a king of Judah renamed Jehoiakim by Pharaoh. The name persisted in Jewish use and surfaced among Puritans (colonial New England records hold many an Eliakim).
Today it lives mainly in Orthodox Jewish and Hebrew-rooted Christian families, rare everywhere. The friendly nicknames Eli and Kim hide inside its four stately syllables.
