History & Origin
Audree is a variant of Audrey, the smoothed-down medieval form of Old English Æthelthryth — 'noble strength' — borne by the seventh-century saint and queen Etheldreda of Ely. The name survived the centuries through her cult, was used by Shakespeare for a country lass in As You Like It, and was reborn glamorous with Audrey Hepburn.
As Audrey surged back into the American top tier in the 2000s and 2010s, spelling variants followed; Audree is the most common of them, giving the classic a breezier finish. It remains a rare alternative to its evergreen original.
