Amina

History & Origin

Amina derives from the Arabic root a-m-n, expressing the concepts of safety, trust, and faithfulness. The name achieved lasting religious significance through Amina bint Wahb, the mother of the Prophet Muhammad, who died when he was approximately six years old. This connection elevated Amina to a name of profound honor in Islamic cultures, where naming a daughter Amina is often considered an act of devotion.

Beyond its Islamic context, Amina has been used across sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East, South Asia, and North Africa for centuries, carried by trade routes, scholarship, and religious practice. In the West, Amina gained visibility in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries alongside growing Muslim communities. It is also known through historical figures such as Queen Amina of Zaria, a sixteenth-century warrior queen of northern Nigeria.
