Amada

History & Origin

Amada is the Spanish word 'beloved' — the feminine of amado, from Latin amata — used as a given name since medieval times; the masculine Amado and the Latin saint's name Amata of Assisi (a follower of St. Clare) kept the family in the calendars. Mexican composer Agustín Lara's famous 'Amada' songs serenaded the word for decades.

The name peaked in early twentieth-century Mexico and the U.S. Southwest, and now reads as a grandmother's treasure ripe for revival. It remains rare — a one-word love letter.
