History & Origin
Alp comes from Old Turkic and is attested in some of the earliest Turkic texts. As a word, it means 'brave man' or 'hero'. As a title, it was used throughout the Seljuk and early Ottoman periods to honor warriors of exceptional courage. It appears in the names of Seljuk sultans such as Alp Arslan (1029–1072), who defeated the Byzantine Empire at the Battle of Manzikert.
Alp Arslan (meaning 'heroic lion') remains the most famous historical bearer, and his victory at Manzikert in 1071 opened Anatolia to Turkish settlement. Today Alp is used as a standalone given name in Turkey and among Turkic peoples. Turkish television dramas set in the medieval period have renewed interest in Turkic heroic names like Alp.
