Allexis

History & Origin

Allexis is a personalized spelling of Alexis, a Greek name from alexein, 'to defend' or 'to help' — the same root behind Alexander. Borne by an early Christian saint, Alexis served as a boys' name for centuries before becoming overwhelmingly female in late-twentieth-century America. Doubling the l gave Allexis a distinctive look during exactly that boom.

The spelling appears in the U.S. record from the late 1980s and reached its small peak in 1997, at the height of the Alexis era, before easing off. An Allexis from that peak is now in her late twenties. It never rose beyond rarity — the standard Alexis carried the crowd — but its clear Greek 'defender' meaning gives it more substance than a pure coinage.
