Tips for International Adoptions

Therefore, many people turn to international adoptions.  In many cases, adopting internationally can be very successful and fulfilling.
After you have made the decision to adopt, you must next decide what country you would like to adopt a child from.  In order to pick a country that will work with your needs, you will want to make sure you do sufficient research.  Each country has its own rules and regulations that must be followed.

You will also need to choose an adoption agency to work with.  There are countless numbers of agencies that are more than willing to work with you.  However, not every agency is appropriate for every couple.  You will need to make sure you are working with a reputable agency.  If you have family or friends that have adopted internationally, you can ask them for their recommendations.  However, if you don’t know of anyone personally who has adopted internationally, then you can simply check with the Better Business Bureau.  The BBB can tell you if there are any complaints or problems with the agency you are looking to work with.  Many agencies offer informational meetings in which you can attend.  Be sure to check out some of the meetings and ask any questions you may have.  This will help you get a feel for how the agency is run.

There are a variety of pros and cons with an international adoption.  Therefore, when looking into adopting, it is important that you carefully weigh all of your options and do not make any hasty decisions.  Though you may want a child immediately, it is important to have a full understanding of the adoption process before taking the first steps.

One of the biggest disadvantages of an international adoption is the cost.  Often times, adopting internationally can become very expensive.   Not only is there the expensive of the actual adoption, but there is also the expensive of travel, time away from work and accommodations while away.  In many instances, adopting parents will need to spend approximately two weeks in the foreign country.  Another disadvantage is that medical records of biological parents are often hard to come by.  Therefore, chances are you will not have any information on the baby, since he or she has spent a majority of their life in an orphanage.  International adoptions can also be a very long process.

Often times, international adoption agencies do not have as many restrictions in place as those in the United States do.  Each country has its own set of rules and regulations.  It is important to understand that the United States cannot intervene in the international adoption process.  As well, lawyers in the U.S. cannot represent a couple in foreign courts.

There are some general guidelines that countries tend to follow for adoptions.  For instance, China requires that adopting parents be at least 30 years of age.  As well, they cannot be any older than 60 years old.  China also stipulates that if you are between 45 and 50 years old, you can only adopt a child who is between the ages of one and half and three years old.  Couples who are between 50 and 55 years old can adopt a child who is two and half years old and older.

China also has a minimum income requirement.  In order to adopt a child from China, a couple must make a minimum of $10,000.  With each child that lives in the home or will be living in the home, another $10,000 must be added to the minimum requirement.  If the couple has four or more children, they must seek prior approval.   China also requires that a couple looking to adopt must be married for at least two years.  In order to be eligible to adopt additional children from China, a couple must wait at least one year, in between each adoption.

Although someone looking to adopt from China is not required to be married, only heterosexuals will be considered for the adoption process.  A single person, who has a roommate living with them, must go through a home study, as well as a medical examination or even police clearance.

International adoptions are a great alternative to the traditional adoptions in the United States.  Many couples turn to international adoptions, simply so they can acquire a younger child.  Often times in the United States it is hard to find an infant for adoption.  Before beginning the adoption process, it is important that you have a full understanding of the overall process.  Make sure you are truly ready for the emotional, as well as financial commitment involved.  You will also want to do your homework and find a legitimate adoption agency, which specializes in international adoptions.  If you take the appropriate steps and fully understand what you are walking into, chances are you will have an enjoyable adoption and can fulfill your desire to have a little one running around the house.
