History & Origin
Ronan is an Irish name derived from ron (seal) with the diminutive suffix -an, meaning 'little seal.' Seals held a special place in Celtic mythology and were associated with the mystical selkie folk who could transform between seal and human form. The name was borne by at least twelve Irish saints, most notably Saint Ronan of Loch Derg.
Ronan has been in continuous use in Ireland for over a millennium. In the late 20th and early 21st centuries it spread to the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia, ranking in the top 200 for boys in the U.S. by the mid-2020s. It gained additional recognition through Taylor Swift's tribute song Ronan (2012), written for a four-year-old who died of cancer.
