History & Origin
Rachel (רָחֵל) is a Hebrew name meaning 'ewe' (female sheep). In the Hebrew Bible, Rachel is one of the four matriarchs of Israel and the beloved wife of the patriarch Jacob. She is the mother of Joseph and Benjamin, two of the twelve sons who founded the twelve tribes of Israel. Her story in Genesis 29–35 is one of the most richly human narratives in the ancient text.
Rachel has been a staple of English naming since the Protestant Reformation, when biblical names gained widespread use. It peaked in the United States in the 1990s, in part due to the character Rachel Green in the television series Friends, and has remained in the top 200 ever since.
