Kali

History & Origin

Kali is one of the most significant deities in the Hindu tradition, worshipped as the goddess of time, death, change, and liberation. Her name derives from the Sanskrit kala, meaning black, dark, or time. She is typically depicted with dark skin, multiple arms, and a fierce expression, representing the destroyer of evil and the liberator of souls from the cycle of birth and death. Kali is especially revered in Bengal and Assam.

As a given name, Kali is used in South Asia both for the goddess's direct devotees and as a general auspicious name. In the Western world, Kali has gained popularity in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, partly due to its pleasing two-syllable sound and partly due to growing awareness of Hindu spirituality. Parents in the United States and Europe sometimes choose it unaware of the full Hindu iconographic context, drawn primarily by its phonetic appeal.
