History & Origin
Ignacio is the Spanish form of Ignatius, from the Roman family name Egnatius. Although the Roman name's origin is uncertain, it became strongly associated by folk etymology with the Latin ignis (fire), giving the name the popular meaning of 'fiery one'. The name was rare until the veneration of Saint Ignatius of Antioch (c. 35–108 AD), an early Christian bishop and martyr.
The name Ignacio gained its greatest impetus from Saint Ignatius of Loyola (1491–1556), the Basque nobleman who founded the Jesuits after a military career was ended by a cannonball wound. His spiritual autobiography and the Spiritual Exercises he wrote have made him one of the most influential Catholics in history. Ignacio remains a top masculine name throughout Spain and Latin America.
