History & Origin
Elijah comes from the Hebrew Eliyyahu (אֵלִיָּהוּ), a compound of El (God) and Yahu (a form of the divine name Yahweh), meaning 'my God is Yahweh.' The prophet Elijah is one of the most dramatic figures in the Hebrew Bible, a champion of monotheism who challenged the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel.
The name was used by Puritans and other Protestants who favored biblical names. It appeared regularly in 18th- and 19th-century America but was not especially common. Its modern surge began in the 1990s, and Elijah has ranked in the U.S. top ten boys' names since the 2010s.
