Today’s teens deal with more choices than teens in the past. There are many issues that teens face, and that can feel scary as a parent. How can you make sure they are going to make the right decisions in life? Well, first you need to realize that even if you give them the best upbringing possible, teens don’t always make decisions that are right. After all, even adults don’t always make the right decisions. There are things parents can do to help teens make good decisions. They might still make the wrong decision every once in awhile, but with these parenting tips, you can really help to influence your teen in the right way.

Parenting Tip #1 – Keep Talking to Your Teen

One important tip to help your teen make good decisions is to keep talking to your teen. Often teens begin to go silent on you, but keep on talking anyway. Even if they act like they’re ignoring you and they don’t talk back, keep on talking to them. More than you think is getting through to them when you’re talking, so keep it up.

Parenting Tip #2 – Show Them By Your Example

Show your teens how to make good decisions by example. You cannot expect that your teen is going to behave better than you do. Make good decisions in your own life. If you mess up, own up to it and show your teen that mistakes happen but you can learn from the mistakes and go on. Remember, your teen is watching you, and what you do is going to be at least as important, if not more so, than what you say to them.

Parenting Tip #3 – Share Examples From Your Life

Another great idea to help your teen make good decisions is to share examples from your own life. Of course, you need to be careful about this. You don’t want to encourage them to make bad decisions either. Some situations though can be used as examples and you can let your teen know what kind of consequences occur when you make choices that aren’t the right ones. Allow them to learn from your own mistakes so they will make the right decisions in life.

Parenting Tip #4 – Avoid Being Judgmental

Whenever situations come up with your teen where one of their friends has made a wrong decisions, don’t be judgmental about the situation. You can take the bad choices that their friends of made and use them as a way to open up conversations on these topics and what the right decisions should have been. If you are judgmental, you’ll end up cutting off open conversation, losing an opportunity to talk to your teen more about the right decisions.

Parenting Tip #5 – Encourage Honesty

Encourage honesty from your teen. Let them know that they can talk to you, no matter what is up. Make sure that they know that you are going to love them no matter what. This helps to keep the lines of communication open so you can help them to make the right decisions, and aid them with fixing things if they make a wrong decision. It’s a good idea to let your teen know that you are going to be even more upset if they lie to you. You’d rather know about a bad decision they made than to have them make it worse by lying to you. Just make sure that you don’t react harshly or your teen won’t want to talk to you about things.

Parenting Tip #6 – Accept Times When They Make Mistakes

It’s important as a parent to accept the times when your teen makes mistakes. There will be times when they make the wrong decision. Everyone makes the wrong decision from time to time. Don’t use this time to berate your child, but use it as a building block to help them understand why making the right decisions is so important. Examine the decision, what was behind it, and how they could have made a better choice for a better end result. If your teen gets pregnant, help them through the situation. Many parents have a misconception that if a pregnant teenager decides to give birth, they will be unable to pursue an education and career. This is not the case. A teen can go on to live the life they want as well as raise their child if they have support for proper teenage parenting.

Parenting Tip #7 – Remember Your Teen Isn’t Perfect

It’s so important that you remember that your teen isn’t perfect. Don’t expect perfection from them or you won’t have the opportunity to help them make good decisions. You’ll only alienate them if you try to make them act perfectly. Teens have to learn, just like you did, which means they’ll make some mistakes and have to deal with the consequences of bad decisions along the way. Remember this and it will make this a lot easier for you as you work with your teen to help them come up with the right answers and decisions for their life.

As a parent, you really do have a lot of influence over your teen, even if it doesn’t seem that way. You can help to teach them very important lessons if you do it the right way. With these tips you can work with your teen to help them make good decisions. You can only do your best with your teen and work to help make sure they have the tools needed to make the right decisions that will provide them with a happy and well balanced life.
