Families everywhere are really getting severly pinched or hurt with the price of gas these days, and there is no end in sight. We have to do everything we can to save a little here and there, not only on road trips, but on everyday tips to drop kids off at school, work, or the grocery store. This summer a lot of families will be driving on the roads. With the price of gas and diesel both climbing, it is important to remember that no matter how much you are paying at the pump, there are some ways to save your gas once you've purchased it, which will allow you to spend less overall on gasoline. There are things that a family, and there are things that you can do to your car to make sure that you are able to save on gasoline. Here are a few gas saving tips that may help.

Daily Gas Saving Tips

First of all, we should all know that driving slower helps save money, so try to make it a habit to drive slower then you would normally drive. The slower that you go, the more you save on gas. The general rule is to keep it under 55 or 60 MPH – every 5 miles an hour that you go over that, you are going to be reducing your fuel economy by 5%, and it will only mean a little time added to your trip.

Also, if you can use the cruise control whenever possible, or drive at a steady speed when you cannot use the cruise control, you'll find that you also save on gas money. This is because driving at a steady speed uses gasoline more slowly, while slowing down and speeding up is a way to waste gas.

This also pertains to your accelerations. If you are accelerating very quickly, you are going to be burning more fuel, hands down. Therefore, if you can accelerate more slowly, you will save on gas – and the wear and tear will be less on your car as well.

If you drive a manual transmission, shift into the next gear as soon as you can, which will cut back on the amount of fuel that you use. Just be careful not to switch too soon, because this will damage your car.

You shouldn't idle, either, whenever you can avoid it. Leaving the car running might seem like a good idea, and it might be quicker for you, but turn the car off when you aren't using it to save on gasoline. This will be better for your car overall, and will save you lots of money on gas, too.

Of course, the best thing that you can do as a driver is not to drive. If you can carpool to work or school, or ride your bike to the store, or even walk, you'll save money on gas simply by not using it. In many places, people only use their cars when they absolutely have to. If you have neighbors or friends who are going the same place as you are, see if carpooling is a good option. Otherwise, check out the public transportation in your area, or decide where you can easily walk or ride your bike. On a trip check out the public transportation system ahead of time, and make it a fun experience. For example, taking a cable car ride in San Francisco can be an experience of a lifetime for a child.

Since you will more than likely be traveling with children, you may want to read our article Traveling with Kids. This will give you some ideas to keeping your children entertained so you don't have to drive as fast.

Things To Do To Your Car

It is important for drivers and riders to follow certain responsibilities in order to save gas – but there are some great tips that you can follow for your car, too, so that you can ultimately save as much as possible on gas.

First of all, if there is anything on your car that doesn’t need to be there, take it off. Things like roof racks, ski racks, and even flags that flutter in the wind all create drag while you are driving, and will burn more fuel more quickly. Get your car as streamlined as possible, and remember that you can take off your roof racks unless you are using them. This will save greatly on gas.

You don't need your snow tires or chains in warm weather, so take them off. The size of your wheels and tires are going to effect the way that your car burns fuel, so try to get smaller tires. Just be careful so that they are safe for your car and safe for you.

If you have heavy things in your trunk or the backseat of your car, take them out. Even a box of books can cost you an extra few dollars per trip, and when gas costs so much already , each dollar that you save is going to be worth it. So clean out your car and make sure you aren't paying for anything extra to be dragged along with you.

Last, be absolutely sure that you keep up on your car's maintenance. Be sure that you have taken your car in regularly and have the entire thing tuned up. You'd be surprised at how much money this can save you when it comes to fuel economy.

By following a few simple tips, you can be sure that both you and your car are ready to save as much as possible on gas money – now and in the future.

Lastly, consider a gas rebate card and earn a little extra money off of every purchase. One thing to keep in mind with these cards is to only use them for purchases you will get a rebate from and to make sure you pay them off right away or they will lose their value. Of course the credit card companies are hoping you will keep a balance on the card, but make sure you don't. Every little bit helps.

My mother-in-law has been talking about for years – taking my family and my sister-in-law’s family for a cruise. But the timing never worked out until now. This year, for the first time ever, my children’s schools and my nephews’ schools have spring break the same week. So hi-ho, hi-ho, it’s off to Mexico we go. I am a vacation planner junky, so naturally I am hip-deep in research about the best way to enjoy our cruise and keep six kids ranging in age from 7 (the only girl) to 14 happy and healthy for a week. So here is what I have learned – check back with me in March to see how the reality lives up to the research.

Which Cruise Line to Choose?

Which cruise line to choose was the first question we had. Of course, your departure location helps narrow this choice. Unless you have unlimited time and money for your vacation, you will likely choose the departure port that is nearest your home. The major ports for cruise ship departures in North America are

Baltimore

Boston

Brooklyn

Cape Liberty NJ

Manhattan

Montreal

Norfolk

Philadelphia

Quebec

Anchorage

Honolulu

San Francisco

Seattle

Vancouver

Charleston

Fort Lauderdale

Jacksonville

Miami

Mobile

New Orleans

Port Canaveral

San Juan

Tampa

Galveston

Long Beach

Los Angeles

San Diego

Not every cruise line ships out of every port. For example, we are cruising out of Galveston, which narrowed our cruise line options to four: Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Princess, or Celebrity.

Once you decide on your departure point, other factors may help narrow your cruise line choices even more:

Your date of departure

How long a cruise you want to take

What ports of call you want to visit

What about Children’s Programs?

Of course, since you are cruising with your children, another question that will affect your choice of cruise lines is what facilities and programs are available for children. All the major cruise lines are now courting family cruisers and have special programs and activities for children and teens. Everything from family suites to casual dining hours, baby swimming pools, rock climbing walls, and supervised children’s activities are now available from most cruise lines. You can check each cruise line’s web site or ask your travel agent about specific amenities for families and children. Some specific questions to ask include:

What ages do children need to be to participate in children’s programs?

What time do the children’s programs run? Is after-hour babysitting available?

Are children divided into separate groups by age?

What qualifications do the leaders of the children’s programs have (education, experience, background checks)?

What security methods are used to keep children safe in the children’s center and to ensure they are only picked up by authorized adults?

What is the ratio of children to adult staff in the children’s center?

Is a third/fourth passenger rate available for children staying in the same room as their parents?

Are family suites or connecting rooms available?

Is a children’s menu available?

Is open meal seating available?

What family activities are available, both onboard the ship and at port?

Are wading pools available for young children?

Are facilities such as rock climbing walls and game rooms available for older children and teens?

Are cribs available?

Are beepers available if the children’s counselors need to contact a parent quickly?

Do the children’s programs include activities for special needs children?

Do the cabins have a television?

Will there be special movies or live entertainment that children will enjoy?

How Much Will a Cruise Cost?

As vacations go, cruises can be relatively inexpensive. They definitely cost more than camping out at the state park, but less than a week on-site at Disney World! Remember that the price includes your room, meals, entertainment and activities, some beverages, use of facilities, and the onboard children’s programs. The price does not include shore excursions, tips, alcoholic drinks, or after-hours babysitting. Soft drinks are included on some cruise lines. Don't forget, Disney has its own cruises you might want to check out.

The exact cost of your cruise depends on how long it is and what type of room you reserve. To save money, book early – or, if you can handle spontaneity – look for last-minute cruise deals.

If you haven’t done a lot of traveling, don’t forget to include the price of passports for everyone into your vacation budget. Even youngsters need passports now anytime you leave the United States.

Happy cruising!

Splish, splash, we love waterparks, whether they are indoor or outdoor ones! Here is a guide to some of the best waterparks and waterslides that the whole family is sure to enjoy.

By Michelle Donaghey

No doubt about it! We love waterparks, whether they are indoor or outdoor ones!
“Waterparks appeal to families who want quality recreation time in an extremely safe environment. After all, waterparks are the safest place to have fun in the water compared to oceans, rivers, lakes and even swimming pools,” noted Gina Kellogg, Director of Communications for the World Waterpark Association, Overland Park, Kansas. In fact, there ware more than 1,000 waterparks in North America with an estimated attendance each season over 70 million people.
“For families who want a safe place to place in the water that’s also really convenient, then, waterparks are the perfect answer,” noted Kellogg.
The reasons?
For families, one of the most obvious reasons for our love is that the rides are very similar to roller coaster rides found in top-notch amusement parks. Some of them include:

Black Anaconda- Over ¼ mile long with 6 hair-raising climbs and 30 mph spiraling drops- Noah’s Ark, Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin

Zip Coaster- Reaches speeds up to 20 mph over 500 feet of slide for a fast ride- Kalahari Resort in Sandusky, Ohio

Crush n’ Gusher- Crushing jets of water propel your raft through a surprise –filled ride, climb and breathtaking plunge. Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon, Orlando, Florida

What other amusements bring us back time and time again to waterparks? It has to be the variety of slides that we can find, varying from one location to the next.

Some fun waterslides include:

Shark Slam, Gator Gush, Barracuda Blast and Pelican Plunge- Coco Key Water Resort, Arlington Heights, Il.

Eerie Falls- Three winding tunnels filled with cascades of water in the dark. Soak City at Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio

Summit Plummet- A single-person, free-fall waterslide 120 feet tall, Blizzard Beach, Orlando, Florida.

The Black Hole- Riders dive into a black hole in a wild ride in tentacle-like tubes from a black flying saucer. Six Flags, Arlington, Texas.

Still another very popular type of ride that waterpark thrill seekers look for are bowl rides. These are getting more and more elaborate and taller as years go by. Some of them include:

Great Wolf Lodge’s six story bowl ride- Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin.

Disco Theme Bowl ride- Orlando, Florida, Wet n’ Wild

The Cyclone- Erie, Pennsylvania, Splash Lagoon Indoor Waterpark

Want to go to the beach and swim in the waves but don’t want to drive all the way to the coast? Many parks offer wave pools that could rival any coastal beach. Great wave pools at parks include:

Typhoon Lagoon at Orlando, Florida which is 115 feet wide by 360 feet long.

Kahuna Beach is the largest tropical beach in Mason, Ohio, with authentic ocean waves crashing down around exotic islands, lounge seating under the shade of gently swaying palm trees.

Hurricane Harbor Wave Pool- One of the largest and newest in North America. Six Flags, Gurnee, Illinois.

Want to learn to surf but can’t get to Hawaii, California, or Florida? Kids as well as adults can learn to surf at some waterparks!

The Waterpark of America in Minneapolis, Minnesota offers guests a chance to surf on their flow rider- the flow rider offers riders a shallow but very fast moving sheet of water that one can surf or “boogie-board” on. The flow rider is 3 inches deep and the pool surface is foam-padded.

Camelbeach Surf in the Mountains in Tannersburg, Pennyslvania notes that riders can try stand-up surfing or a boogie board, and much like snowboarding and skateboarding, as riders put in more time, they will develop more skills and style.

Everyone loves to go to the movies and this year, you can watch a movie with interactive features at one of the Midwest’s waterparks!
Noah’s Ark in Wisconsin Dells will be opening their new, 4-D Dive-In Theater which features nine, separate effects to stimulate and entertain guests.
It is the first and only 3D/4D theater worldwide to really exploit water during performances using three, drenching special effects – water squirts, overhead water drops and water cannons. Six other special effects will test your senses with leg ticklers, vibration, scent, wind, lightning and bubbles.

This summer, Noah’s 4-D Dive-In Theater will be playing SpongeBob SquarePants™ 4-D Movie.

Although you may not be able to afford a summer vacation this year, there are no-cost, fun summer activities for the whole family. Here are a few ideas.

Pick a tree in your back yard and lay down a blanket. Have some lemonade and cookies, and read the books you’ve checked out from the library. Take turns reading. Invite friends and their kids to join you. Make it a weekly event.

If your kids love pirates, make a treasure box with your kids. Have them scout around the back yard or beach for rocks or sea shells or any item they think would be cool to include. Have the kids make a treasure map and include some information on pirates found on the internet. Add some coins, and make a pirate’s flag with black fabric. Have the kids add their own symbols to it. Then the kids can bury it in the back yard or keep it on hand and add to it each year.

Gardening is another no-cost fun summer activity for kids. Have your kids plant their own flower garden. Talk about each flower; how it grows, how much room it needs, and then give the kids a title, such as Director of Water Resource (this would be for one kid to oversee the watering of the plants); or Director of Roots and Shoots (this would be for another kid to oversee the weeding), etc. Also, give your kids some watermelon seeds to plant. You never know what may crop up.

With baseball season just starting, why not have your family start a scrapbook on a favorite sports team or even choose a rookie and follow his career. The scrapbook could contain photos with captions, newspaper clippings, and sports items you may already own. Make it a family tradition. Each member can contribute to the scrapbook. Perhaps mom and dad have some stories that they may want to include in the scrapbook as well.

With summer almost here, many families are planning a family getaway. Traveling with kids can be a lot of fun, but it can also be a bit trying for parents, particularly when the kids are small. Small children often have very short attention spans, and they're not able to become absorbed in reading a book for instance, to while away several hours of a trip. Trips are hard on kids of all ages, because most kids want to move around and do fun things. Smaller kids have the most difficult time with traveling though, because on short hour can seem like a whole day to them. So keeping them occupied while traveling can be a challenge.

There are many things you can do to help make traveling with kids a more enjoyable experience though. Some things work well for smaller children, while others are usually best for kids a little older. Most of the techniques we cover here are for traveling with kids in a car, but some of the tips can be used for air travel, trains or buses too.

Regardless of how you're traveling with kids though, one very important part of any trip is the pit stops. These are even more important for young children, particularly those who are recently potty broken. You need to make every effort to stop at least once each hour when traveling, and let the kids go to the bathroom.

This one hour pit stop is also an excellent time to let them stretch their legs and run out a bit of the pent up energy too though. If possible, try to let the kids run around and play at rest areas for instance, for at least fifteen minutes or so.

If you're traveling by plane of course, you won't have the luxury of rest areas. And this can be difficult particularly for smaller children, because there is no where for the kids to stretch their legs and have fun.

It can be quit helpful to travel with kids at night time actually, because you're often able to drive or fly for many hours at a time while the kids are sleeping. This makes traveling easier on both the children and the parents, because by the time the kids wake up, you may already be at your destination.

If you're traveling with kids on a airplane though, unfortunately you'll have to stick to the airline's schedule, and that may not allow for nighttime travel.

Whether you're traveling with kids by car, plane or train however, there are things you can take along which will help make the time more bearable for both of you. Pack small toys, games and coloring books to help keep the kids occupied with activities for instance. Also be sure to take plenty of extra liquids for the kids to drink, plus easy finger food snacks too.

If your children are old enough to read and write, pack some books that are appropriate for their ages, and encourage them to start a vacation journal too. The vacation journal is where the kids can draw pictures and write down information they notice along the way. This journal will become a family keepsake in later years.

If your kids like to watch movies, you can sometimes make traveling with them easier by bringing along a portable dvd player and a favorite movie or two as well.

Don't forget to take extra clothes when you're travelling with kids too, especially if your children are still quite small. They spill foods and drinks on themselves, and if they're young enough they may have an accdent if a bathroom isn't close at hand too.

Finally, pack wet disposable wipes or a moist washcloth into a sealable plastic bag too, and cleaning faces and hands will be much easier while traveling.

Hopefuly these tips will help make your next framily trip an enjoyable.

Each year one thing we all look forward to is the family holiday; whether it is Thanksgiving or Christmas, 4th of July or Hanukah, getting the family together for a holiday is always what makes it enjoyable and memorable. With both Thanksgiving and Christmas just around the corner many families are thinking of traveling. While family holidays can be stressful they can also be fun and enjoyable and create memories that last a lifetime. Here are some thoughts on family holidays.

What to Expect on a Family Holiday

As we grow up, the times we remember and cherish most are the family holidays we had and the things that took place at those gatherings. Attending a family holiday is relaxing and enjoyable, because you are in a gathering of people who love one another and want to be in each other’s company – at least most of the time.

There are many times when one gets a bit stressed by taking a family holiday such as:

* Coming home for a family holiday with a boyfriend/girlfriend your family doesn’t know about.
* Hosting a big family holiday where all of your family members are expected out, including your in-laws.
* A family holiday that requires expensive preparation and travel.
* A family holiday at your in-laws.

While there are probably many more reasons why a family holiday can end up slightly stressful, the truth is that in the end you overcome all this stress by being in the company of your family, who you thought would cause the stress in the first place.

Complicated? Not at all – there are times when we feel nervous in the presence of some family members, but if you are calling them family, then remember there is no issue that cannot be worked out between family.

Family is the most precious gift we have, which will stand by you no matter what even if some will criticize, scream (moms usually), discipline (dads), and pamper (grandparents) – they all mean well deep down inside and will always be there for you.

Family holidays, whether its Christmas or the 4th of July, may be hectic almost always, but they are the times we had, have, and will always have to remember and cherish. It is at these gatherings that we learn to share and love one another, to be patient and obedient, and do what our heart tells us, as the family will always be there behind you to support and love you.

Whatever you do, don't let this holiday season stress you out. Enjoy family gathering and holidays even if they are not always great – connecting with family is what makes us who we are and what we will be, now and always. This is the time memories that last a lifetime are created, so have fun and enjoy!

However, with the increasing cost of airfares and lodging, many people feel they can no longer afford to go on vacation. The good news is that with a bit of extra effort, you can plan a budget family vacation that everyone will enjoy. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

Start planning in advance. If you start your search in advance, you have a better chance to find a special offer that provides you with a budget family vacation package to a dream location. In addition, planning is a fun activity to share with the whole family.

Choose a non-peak period. A vacation in a non-peak period can be a lot less expensive than during peak periods. Travel agents have special offers in May and September. It is much easier to plan a budget family vacation during these two months.

Be flexible about the location. Some airlines run special promotions for certain vacation spots. Although they don't fly anywhere, if you happen to enjoy one of their vacation destinations, you will get cheaper airplane tickets for your budget family vacation.

Choose something close to your home. Another great tip for a budget family vacation is to find an attractive location within 300 miles from your home. This way you will be able to go there by car and reduce your travel expenses.

Choose a vacation rental. Research has shown that the average holidaymaker spends more on food than on accommodation during a family vacation. If you find a vacation rental with a kitchen, you can cook some of your own meals. This way you will spend less money on dining out.

Take your friends along. Another idea for a budget family vacation is traveling with your friends. In addition to sharing the accommodation costs, traveling in a larger group has plenty of other advantages. Everything is more entertaining when friends come along and your kids can also play together. You can take turns babysitting so you can enjoy a romantic dinner in a fine restaurant.

Go camping. Many kids would love going camping because it's fun and exciting, and they also have the chance to make friends with other kids. Camping is the most affordable option for a family vacation. The cost for a family with four members is less than $1000, including buying new gear. Campsites are usually located in wonderful settings and include plenty of planned activities and bathroom and shower facilities. Some even provide wireless Internet access and cable TV. If you love outdoor adventures, going camping is a great option for a budget family vacation.

A budget family vacation can sometimes be more fun and exciting than an expensive one. If you put some effort into the planning process, you can have a perfect vacation with your loved ones and share some unforgettable life experiences.

Editorial comment:As a child my family was too busy for an organized family vacation. In the fast paced life we have today we need to take more time for ourselves and our family. I don't plan on letting the same thing happen to my new family. This article talks about the important of planning a trip as a whole family. That extra planning and participation can make trips more enjoyable for everyone and bring a family closer together. Well enough with my editorial comment, I hope you will enjoy the article.

A time for bonding. An enjoyable family vacation is a great opportunity to bond with your family and share some unforgettable experiences. It all begins with planning a family vacation together. The key to a perfect vacation is a good plan. If you do it the right way, the planning will be half the fun. Here are a few tips for planning a family vacation the best way possible.

Start planning a family vacation in advance. Planning a family vacation should be fun and exciting. You can start weigh before you go to a travel agent by making a list of your favorite vacation spots. If you start your search in advance, you have a better chance to find a hot deal and spend less than you expected.

Involve everyone in the planning. Even if your youngest kid is just four or five, try to involve him/her in the planning as well. Planning a family vacation all together is much more exciting and everyone has the chance to share his/her opinion with the others. In addition, if your make your kids feel involved, they will probably be more satisfied with the decisions. Even teens will be much more open if they feel their opinion matters to you.

Don't fight. Planning a family vacation is the last thing you should fight about. Remember spending quality time together is the only reason you're doing it. If you're all cranky and ready to fight, there's a high chance you will ruin you vacation. Listen to everyone's opinion and try to make compromises in order to keep everyone satisfied.

Choose the right location. When planning a family vacation, choosing your vacation spot is the most important part of the process. To make sure no one gets bored, you should try to find a location that has something for everyone.

A resort that offers a kids' program is real great and will keep your kid entertained throughout the whole trip. If your kid is a teenager, a resort that includes a teens' club or at least a good mall is probably your best option. Make sure you will also have a chance to relax and unwind in fine restaurants, spas or other amenities. If your family loves snorkeling and scuba diving, find a location that provides water-sports as well.

Find a hot deal. When you go to a travel agent, ask about special discounts for kids and promotions during certain periods of the year. They may be able to offer you something even if it's not listed on their website. If you're flexible about the time and location of your holiday, you may find a hot deal and spend much less than you expected.

Planning a family vacation is fun and exciting, making you dream about all the wonderful things you are about to experience. Good planning is the first step to a wonderful vacation. If you know everyone's desires and expectations, you will have a better chance to find a vacation package that makes your whole family happy.

Whether it be the local park or a backyard, summertime is the time for these man-made water holes.Phone first and ask questions! Planning to visit a local pool? The rule is always phone-first. While the pool may have their hours listed, often they do not list when there swim lesson times are which coincide with their hours. Before your day is ruined because you went when lessons were going on, call. Besides, you can find out if they have lockers to rent or for free and much admission is. Also ask if water toys and or life preservers or water wings are accepted- some pools allow them while others may not.

At the pool
It's a good idea to leave the purse in the car hidden from view. Buy a small money holder that hangs around your neck that you can put change in. Pin your car key into your bathing suit and mark your towel with your name with a laundry marker- your towel may be unusual to you, but at the pool, three other people may have the same towel. And don't forget the sunblock! Diving boards are tempting to kids of all ages, but it is best for only kids who are good swimmers to use them. It also may be tempting for you to teach your kids to dive, but it is best left to the professionals. If you really want them to learn, find out about lessons. Children are not developmentally ready for swim lessons until after their fourth birthday according to the A.A.P. which also notes that whenever infants or toddlers are around water, an adult should be within arm's length, providing "touch supervision." "Never leave children alone in or near a pool, even for a moment," says the A.A.P.

WATER PARKS
Everybody in the family from little tikes to grandma can have a good time at a water parks. Offering thrill-seekers exciting rides, little ones big water shooters, slides and ships and seniors lazy rivers, water parks are a popular destination in the summertime. What to pack But while it may be tempting to just put on and wear your bathing suit all day and evening, it's a good idea to bring along a change of clothing along with the towels when visiting a water park. Leave the big purses, bags and beach toys at home. If you wear glasses and absolutely need them to see, get an elastic holder specially made to hold them on your head tightly though on most attractions you will need to hold them. Don't wear bathing suits that have zippers or buckles as "they can scratch the fiberglass and could possibly cut you" says Chris Landgrave of Deep River Waterpark. Leave water wings at home and ask for life jackets if you feel your child needs them. "You should also bring sweatshirts or something you can put on your little ones- they tend to get cold when they get out of the water," Debbie Childress of Splash Down Dunes. Don't forget the sunscreen even if the day is not sunny. "Even on cloudy days, the sun's rays can pierce the clouds and reflect off the water," says Robin Innes, Director of Public Relations for Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio. Before you hit the slides and rapids and lazy rivers, take everything you are not going to need and lock it up in one of the park's lockers. If you have long hair or any of your children do, it is best to secure it with a elastic band. Clips, barrettes and combs look good, but are easily lost on many water park attractions! Wear booties or swim shoes. Flip flops are OK, but they can have a tendency to get lost in the water and can be trip hazards in wet areas. Riding the rapids, catching the wave pool Parents and children can do most of the attractions at water parks together. "Riding a family-sized raft through a twisting course is a great memory maker," notes Innes who adds that families should have a central meeting place chosen in case they lose track of each other. A good age when children can do a park alone is 13. Parks have rules that children cannot leave without an adult and all parks have assistance when necessary to help find a child. "They are usually located within a few minutes and for some reason, small children when lost often feel they need to head for the car. Front gate people are told not to let any small child walk out unattended," assures Childress. Don't force a child to ride down a slide unless he or she really wants to. "If the child is tall enough (44 inches or taller at Indiana Beach), let the child decide- do not force them," advises Tom Spackman of Indiana Beach. "Some kids are tall enough, they are just not brave enough. Like yourself, they will know if they want to go or not,"adds Childress. When all else fails, ask questions of park personnel that work a particular attraction says Innes who says "they can tell you which ride is fastest and which one may have surprise curves."

Beaches-

Relaxing with a cold, cold can of soda on a beach blanket with the radio playing your favorite station. This is a good start, but when you have a family in tow, it is best to bring along more than the suit, blanket, radio and some sunblock.

What to/not to pack.

For starters, a good choice is a Frisbee says Joni Jones of the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. This versatile toy can be used for games or just for throwing back and forth. Even one child can have fun with one, playing in the sand using it as a shovel. If it does get windy, keep away from the shoreline! Leave kites, baseballs and bats a home. A better choice for balls might be a beachball, but they have a tendency to blow away when the wind picks up.
It may be tempting to bring Fido or Fluffy, but the beach is not the place for a pet. Pets can pick up all sorts of problems if they drink the water or eat things left on the beach. Besides, most beaches have the rule that the pet must be leashed which isn't much fun!
.
A rolling cooler complete with drinks, preferably juice boxes or bags are better than cups and sipper cups which should be left at home. They are bulky taking up more space than necessary. Fruit is a good snack choice, particularly because it is biodegradable. For meals, sandwiches are good and peanut butter is best because you don't have to worry about food poisoning. Pack a small, empty plastic garbage bag that you can put all the trash in. Don't ruin it for everyone by leaving your garbage on the beach- besides, if you are caught, you will possibly be fined.
Take along a few old vinyl tablecloths or buy some throwaway ones at the local dollar store. Leave these in the car for sitting on when traveling home in wet suits. While they may not be as comfortable, they will keep your car cleaner and drier!

If you are going to a state park or beach on a local lake, call ahead and find out the rules before you go. Sometimes, cans are not acceptable nor are glass items and some beaches do not allow food or drinks. Small grills may be allowed at some while others do not.

Before letting your kids loose to have fun, be sure that anyone who does not know how to swim has a lifevest that is approved for usage, not water/swim wings, Styrofoam donuts or rafts notes the American Academy of Pediatrics. Do not take a risk and think just because the beach seems shallow it is. If there is a lifeguard or beach attendant, ask him or her about the water drop-off, possible rip currents which can occur on windy days and if there are any hazards to be aware of. "Always swim directly in front of a lifeguard. Bathers should stay near lifeguard stations where there are posted currents and surf conditions," says Jones.

Some beaches will be sand in one area, and muck in another. Do not trust kids or adults for that matter that swim alone will be safe- always stick with a buddy system, particularly at a beach. People should also realize that lifeguards are not baby-sitters. Be sure to slather on the sun lotion every time they swim and/or every three hours or you may pay for it later.

At the end of the day, gather everything up on the blanket and roll it like a sleeping bag and place it in the trash bag you brought along. That way, if sand is in your blanket, it stays there and not in your car!
