"Thanksgiving was never meant to be shut up in a single day"

Robert Caspar Lintner

When people ask me what my favorite holiday is, I always say Thanksgiving. I don’t know that deep down Thanksgiving is really my favorite holiday, but I feel sorry for it. There it is, sandwiched between the candy, costumes, and trick-or-treat of Halloween and the gifts, glitz, and glamour of Christmas. How is a simple, mostly non-commercialized holiday like Thanksgiving supposed to compete?

Sure, there have been a few attempts to make Thanksgiving more exciting. You can buy a few Thanksgiving decorations and there is a Charlie Brown Thanksgiving special. There are even a few hymns in church we seem to reserve for Thanksgiving. But all told, sometimes it seems like the only purpose of Thanksgiving is to eat turkey, watch football, and, oh yeah, kick off the Christmas shopping season. Sometimes people even call Thanksgiving “Turkey Day.”

Thanksgiving is so much more than this, though! Thanksgiving is all about God and thanking him for the gifts of life, love, joy, and more. Yes, we get to see family and friends and we get to eat a great meal. But our central purpose should be to give thanks to God. Hmmm, maybe Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday after all.

Thanksgiving remains a hard sell for children, though. No candy, no gifts, no surprises. Sure, you get pumpkin pie and few days off school, but other than that… How can we show our children the importance of both Thanksgiving and giving thanks?

We need to begin by making sure our children know the story of the first Thanksgiving. Children don’t always hear the Thanksgiving story in school anymore, so it is important that you share it with them at home. Find a book or video that tells the story of the Pilgrims, the hard life they suffered in America, their friendships with the Wampanoag people, and how they set aside a day to thank God for his blessings. These people were truly survivors!

Another good way is to establish traditions for thinking about what we are thankful for and sharing it with others. Maybe you have a thankful tree, journal, shoebox, tablecloth, calendar, or space on the refrigerator. This Thanksgiving, have everyone in the family start recording what they are thankful for and by next Thanksgiving, you will have a wonderful record of your year. (If you asked your children what they are thankful for, what do you think they might answer? You might be surprised. In a 2000 survey when children were asked what they were thankful for, the most common answers were family, basic needs, friends, and teachers/school. Maybe we’re already doing a pretty good job teaching our children about thankfulness!)

By establishing this tradition, your goal should be to move the spirit of Thanksgiving from a one-day event to a basic life attitude. As part of this, we need to model thankfulness for our children. This means being thankful no matter what our situation in life. Thankfulness means that we are aware of both our blessings and disappointments but that we focus on the blessings. Are you thankful for your children even when they are squabbling and tattling on each other? Are you thankful for your job even when you feel overworked and underpaid? Are you thankful for your friends even when you don’t get to see them as much as you want? And you can’t just be quietly thankful. Your children need to know you are thankful for them, for your home, and for the other good things in your life. Share with them and give them the chance to share with you all year round.

Also encourage your children to express their thankfulness to God. Set aside time each day to pray and give thanks to God. Don’t just focus on the big things to be thankful for – health, wealth, and happiness. Express thankfulness for the smell of flowers, for ripe bananas, and for warm pajamas.

By the way, did you know that academic studies show that thankful people have higher vitality, more optimism, and less stress and depression than the population as a whole? How great is it that something we should do anyway actually makes us healthier and happier people. What a wonderful legacy we can leave our children by teaching them to be thankful each and every day of their lives.

Although carving pumpkins may very well be the most recognized Halloween craft for the Halloween holiday, it might not be conducive to the climate in which you live. For example, if you live in Texas the humidity would cause the pumpkins to suffer a much too early demise. Also safety concerns arise when using a sharp knife to carve them, it is not exactly an activity that everyone, especially the children who are so in love with Halloween, can do.

It became my mission to find an alternative to pumpkin carving. During a recent trip to a pumpkin patch, I discovered a Halloween activity, which included pumpkins, that even the youngest members of the family can participate in and explore their creativity in a new way; Pumpkin Painting.

Find Out how to create Halloween Pumpkins That Outlast Carved Jack-O-Lanterns By Months! Click here!

Pumpkin painting is a fun and safe way to celebrate autumn and Halloween without the mess and safety concerns of pumpkin carving and your pumpkins will last much longer. With just a few supplies: big or small pumpkins, paint and paint brushes or markers, fake hair, plastic eyes, glue or sealer and your imagination, anyone can transform a plain pumpkin into a whimsical, life-like character.

By tracing a pattern onto the pumpkin, young children can “paint by numbers” and create their own Halloween masterpiece. Or allow them to design their own unique pumpkin face or image on the pumpkin giving them freedom and a sense of accomplishment. Have a pumpkin painting contest, within the family, of who can come up with the most original piece of work. Display the pumpkins outside on the porch so that when trick-or-treaters come by they can vote on their favorite masterpiece. This would be especially fun if you were new to the neighborhood and wanted to meet your new neighbors.

The best feature of painted pumpkins is their lifespan. A pumpkin, once carved, will last three to five days at the most before it begins to collapse and rot. A painted pumpkin, when finished properly, will last four weeks or longer!

A great way to make your pumpkin work double duty is to paint one side for Halloween. When Halloween is over, turn the pumpkin around, paint some autumn or Thanksgiving scene on the opposite side to add to your cornucopia of fresh gourds or to stand alone. Be creative and enjoy!

What are you doing on Monday, September 27th? Hopefully, you'll be doing something special with your family. You see, National Family Day 2010 takes place on September 27th. This special day is part of a movement to help get parents and kids to start eating dinner together. Too many families spend their time going separate ways, doing separate things, and almost living separate lives. You need to find some time to spend together so you can talk to your kids, find out what's going on, and strengthen the family bonds.

The mission of Family Day is to get families to start eating together once again. Behind this day is a study that was done by Columbia University National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse. The findings of these studies done have shown that kids that eat dinner with their family are less likely to end up doing drugs, smoking, or drinking. After these findings came to like the Center on Addition and Substance Abuse launched a movement to help parents realize that having dinner as a family really does make a big difference. While it started out as a simple grassroots initiative, it has since grown to be a celebration that takes place across the nation.

Back in 2009, the President even came out in support of National Family Day. Many county executives, mayors, and governors have also come out to support this day. As many have mentioned, our courts and legislators will never be able to solve the big drug problem that is going on among young people in America. This is something that can only be solved at home by families that spend time together. Already there have been over a million Americans that have made the pledge to have dinner with their family on this day.

Of course, while it's important to spend time this Family Day eating a meal with your family, this is something that families should adapt all year long. That time together as a family allows you to spend quality time together and to talk about their day, their friends, their interests, and more. In fact, it opens the doors to talk to kids about important topics like alcohol and drugs. While it's best to start the pattern of family dinners while the kids are young, it's never too late to start this tradition with your own family.

Wondering how to have successful dinners together? Try getting kids to help in making menus and preparing the meal. Leave the phones in another room and turn the television off so you can focus on your family. Have a routine each night at mealtime when you spend time together. Keep the conversation light and positive and make sure you don't leave anyone out.

So, why not start planning your dinner for National Family Day. Make it a special one on September 27th and then pledge to start making family dinners a nightly occurrence in your home.

Traveling with Kids. Whether you are taking your kids across the country for a summer vacation, or simply planning a trip to the museum across town, here are some tips for making the most of it.

By Kate Hayes

Whether you are taking your kids across the country for a summer vacation, or simply planning a trip to the museum across town, learning to make the most of each adventure can make a big difference in what your preschoolers remember about the experience. And I know that you want them to remember the experience, or you wouldn’t be doing it! In my family’s travels through 15 states with a five year old and a two year old (including a long-distance move from St. Louis to Boston), I have gathered a few travel tips that I’d love to share:

1) Build connections (and excitement) before you go. Don’t you always look forward to visiting a place more when you have some kind of” connection” to it? Perhaps you know someone who lives there. Or maybe you have seen it in history books or in a movie. Being a child of the eighties, I was most excited about my visit to Astoria, Oregon because it was the town from the movie, “The Goonies”…and I got to see the actual house where Chunk did the “Truffle Shuffle!”

Well, put yourself in your preschooler’s size 8 Crocs. They are freshly hatched. They don’t have connections to most of the places that we take them to, unless we provide some for them. A great way to do this is to read a book about the place that you are going to visit several times before you go. For instance, I read the classic, “Make Way for Ducklings” to my kids before we visited the Boston Public Garden and rode the Swan Boats. When we went, my five-year-old daughter was thrilled to see live duck families along with the statues of the ducks from the book. She felt like she already knew them. More recently, we just read “Sarah Morton’s Day: A Day in the Life of a Pilgrim Girl,” as part of our preparation to visit Plimouth Plantation.

If there are no books about the place that you are going to visit, let your child look through the brochure or travel guide. Another fun trick that I have tried is letting my daughter cut out pictures of things that she would like to do in the area we are visiting and paste them on a collage. Then, when we actually get to see and so some of those things, she is super excited about them.

2) Give the kids a camera. You know that old digital camera that you stopped using because the battery wasn’t holding a charge as well as you’d like? Give it to the kids! If you don’t have an old camera, get the kids a disposable one just for the trip. Keep in mind that you are not doing this because you expect four-year-old Mason to capture stunning Kodak moments of a sunset in all its splendor. You are doing it because it will encourage Mason to be engaged in everything that he is seeing, and will help prevent him from getting “BOOOORED.” It will also provide huge amounts of entertainment for you later, when you upload the photos and see your family adventure through your preschooler’s eyes. It will amaze you what they deem to be important. (For an example of this, check out this brief slideshow of my daughter’s photos from our first house hunting trip to Boston when she was four. It is pretty funny.)

3) Pack like a visionary. You’re going to a museum downtown and you’re riding the subway to get there. Did you pack a swimsuit and a towel? That’s right…I said, pack a swimsuit! For your kids to really appreciate life’s adventures, you have to learn to be more adventurous yourself. Don’t just think “museum.” Think…what might happen beyond the museum? What if, on the walk from the subway station to the museum, you encounter a glorious city fountain with children scampering and playing in it? And it’s 95 degrees. And your children are panting like dogs, looking at the fountain like they are hikers lost in the desert. Will you have to pass by because you weren’t prepared and don’t fancy the idea of taking soaked children into a museum? Or will you be able to “seize the day,” heroically whip out some swimsuits, and let your kids enjoy what will probably become their most memorable moments of their trip? Be a visionary. Imagine the possibilities that each adventure holds…and then pack for them.

4) Be ready to bribe. Ooh. Bribery is such a dirty word. I know that some parents are strictly against it, and that’s fine. I, however, have a more lax bribery policy. Never bribe for good behavior at home; however, bribe liberally when travelling. Sometimes your preschooler is just on the verge of a meltdown that will ruin the rest of the day (you totally know what I’m talking about). And somehow, being able to whip a piece of candy out of your bag and offer it to him in exchange for not making an embarrassing scene, makes the day turn out so much better. I honestly never leave home without a bag of Smarties in my purse. SweeTarts and DumDums also make good bribery options. Avoid chocolate, because it will make a melty mess (guess what…M&M’s DO melt in your hands!). Or, if your kid is a fanatic for stickers, small trinkets, or Hot Wheels, those would work too. You know what your child stops in their tracks (or tantrums) for. Be armed and ready.

5) Seal the memories with a self-made memento. So you followed steps one through four, and had a fantastic family adventure with your preschooler. Now, how do you make sure that this magical journey won’t be forgotten along with their journey through the birth canal and other memories from the first few years of life? Make a trip memento! If you scrapbook, create a few scrapbook pages together, making notes of any really funny or adorable moments from the trip. Be sure to include some of the photos that the kids took themselves. Or, if you really want to go the extra mile, log on to a photo service web site like Shutterfly and create an actual hardbound book that you will be able to treasure forever. You can get super creative with these. Here is an example of a story book that I wrote for my kids about our first family trip to Chicago. Note…I said STORY BOOK. I wrote a rhyming story like you would buy in the store, “illustrated” it with pictures from our trip, and came up with a bedtime read that has allowed my daughter to remember a trip that she took when she was three years old like it just happened yesterday.

Being able to introduce our little ones to the world around them is an extraordinary privilege. In my opinion, it’s also one of the most fun parts of being a parent. Every time I spend a day “teaching” my kids something new, I feel like I learn just as much from them as I view the world through their fresh perspective. May you and your family learn much from your summer travels, create many happy memories, and treat every day like the adventure it was meant to be!

From all of us here at More4kids, Happy 4th of July Weekend. The Fourth of July celebrates the birth of the United States of America. Founded July 4th 1776, with the signing of the Declaration of Independence, America is celebrating its 234nd birthday this year (2010).

It is a time for families and friends not only to come together and have fun, but also a time to honor our Veterans and men and women who are putting their lives in danger every day for us, and those who have made the biggest sacrifice for our freedom with their lives. Try to throw your politics aside, and let us all take a moment to think about, and be grateful to all who wear the American uniform, and to our police and firefighters who protect us day in and out. They all deserve our recognition and thanx, more than we can put in words. And don't forget the spouses and families of those in uniform. It takes very special people to be part of a military family, and our hearts, thanx, and recognition should go out to them too.

No matter whether you travel across the country to celebrate our nation’s birthday, or decide to stay at home in your own backyard, there are many different ways to make this a very special holiday.

All that is needed for a fantastic Fourth are three key ingredients:

1. A Plan
2. Preparation
3. and much, much Enthusiasm.

We’ll provide the plan to get you started!

Ready? Set?

Not lets get the ball on the road and get going!

Hosting a Family Friendly Fourth of July Party in Your Back Yard

Unless you have a very large back yard, your best bet is to keep your guest list to less than 30 people. Pot luck picnics are by far the easiest. This leaves you time to add unique and festive touches to the event. Ask guests to bring a side dish, and you can take care of the main course, drinks, and dessert. Along with the party planning, these three courses are enough to keep your hands full.

Traditional Fourth of July celebrations usually include hamburgers and hotdogs on the grill. This is a fine tradition, and worthy of continuing. You can dress up the burgers by adding unique condiments, grilling chicken, and offering whole wheat or specialty buns.

If, however, you’re looking for an easy but unique alternative to the traditional burgers and hotdogs routine, look no further than kebabs. Grilled kebabs can be prepared in advance and they offer your guests an alternative to the standard fare.

Here’s a great recipe you might want to try:

Grilled Holiday Kebabs

1 lb Chicken breast cut into 1 inch cubes

1 lb beef cut into 1 inch cubes

Three green peppers

Three red peppers

Cherry Tomatoes

3 onions

2 zucchini, yellow or green

2 cups large button mushrooms

1 large bottle of your favorite Italian dressing.

- Place cut chicken into large sealable bag. Place beef into separate large sealable bag. Pour ½ cup of Italian dressing into each bag, seal, and marinate for at least 1 hour in refrigerator.

- Cut all vegetables, excluding cherry tomatoes, into 1 to 2 inch pieces. After meat has marinated, place meat and veggies on skewers as you prefer. (Note—if you’re using wooden skewers be sure to soak them in water for 20 minutes before you place the meat and veggies on them. This will prevent the wood from burning on the grill.)

- Store kebabs in an airtight container until you’re ready to grill. Grill on a medium heat until meat is done.

Now that the main course is taken care of you can focus on the beverages and dessert.

Traditional beverages include ice tea, lemonade, and a cooler full of your favorite carbonated beverages. If you’re looking to add a nice touch, consider using ice rings and offering lemon wraps (wedges of lemon wrapped in 4 ½ in square of cheesecloth and tied off) for the ice tea. Also consider offering this wonderful, tasty, and family friendly punch.

Fourth of July Punch

40 oz grape juice

2 liter of favorite lemon lime soda

40 oz pineapple juice

2 oranges sliced thin to float on top

2 limes sliced thin to float on top

Mix all ingredients together in a large container.

Makes 8-9 quarts of punch.

Dessert time can be time to get the children involved in the festivities by making Popsicle rockets. It’s easy, virtually foolproof, and your children will be proud of their tasty accomplishment.

4th of July Popsicle Rockets

Here’s what you need to get started: red juice, blue juice and white juice.
Red is easy, blue can be blue Gatorade or Kool aid, and white juice can be lemonade.

You’ll also need two dozen 3oz paper cups and two dozen Popsicle sticks.

Begin by having your children mix up the juice if need be.

Pour two tablespoons of the red juice into the bottom of each cup and place in the freezer for 2-3 hours.

Remove from freezer add two tablespoons of the white juice and place Popsicle sticks into the center of each cup. Take care when pushing the sticks into the mostly frozen red juice. Children can get enthusiastic and push the sticks all the way through the cup.

Place back into the freezer for another 2-3 hours. Pull out and top with white juice.

Refreeze until hard. Peel off paper cups and serve when ready!

Of course no party is complete without festive activities. Before the fireworks get started, and while the adults are busy socializing, you can keep the children busy making 4th of July spinners.

If possible, recruit an older child or teenager to help with this project. This will leave you free to socialize with your guests and enjoy your party.

Craft materials you will need:

Plastic coffee lids, (red, white, and blue colors). You’ll need one for each child and a few to spare in case accidents occur.

Pens

Scissors

String

Step 1. Have children poke a hole in the center of their lid.
Step 2. Using a pen, have each child draw a spiral on their lid starting at the center and working their way to the outer edge. Ideally the spiral should be about ½ inch wide.
Step 3. Have the children but along the spiral, starting at the outside edge is easier. Be careful not to cut through the hole in the center.
Step 4. Loop the string through the center hole, knot the string, and hang the spinners from a tree or window.

Optional step: If coffee can lids are not an option, you can use colored paper plates. Additionally you can have the children decorate the lids or plates with glitter, stickers, colored glue. Just let your imagination fly.

Firework Safety Guidelines

When night falls, children and adults will invariably want to enjoy a fireworks show. Please follow these guidelines for a safe and happy Fourth of July.

Only use fireworks and sparklers outdoors.

Only children 12 and up should handle sparklers.

Keep several buckets of water available for extinguishing sparklers.

Obey local firework laws. Some states ban fireworks outright, or during a drought.

Light only 1 firework at a time.

Let fireworks soak for 15-20 minutes before disposal.

Always wear eye protection.

Alcohol and fireworks don’t mix. Designate a fireworks lighter!

Adult supervision is a must.

One safety note that I did not realize until recent is that sparklers are the 2nd leading cause of firework injuries. While they may seem harmless always make sure you warn your kids to keep them away from not only their eyes but other peoples eyes when waving them around.

Spicing Up a Simple Family Fourth of July Picnic

Sometimes the best way to spend a Fourth of July, is with your own family. No guests, no parties, just you and your loved ones. The following are a few tips to make your Fourth of July family picnic the best one ever.

It is always good to have a picnic “emergency kit.” A good kit will contain extra paper plates, utensils, wipes, and a plastic table cloth. Additionally, it should have sunscreen and bug repellent, band aids, matches, and trash bags. Pack a Frisbee or ball for entertainment emergencies.

To spice up the menu try cooking chicken burgers using the following recipe.

Fourth of July Chicken Burgers 1 lb ground chicken
2 cups of bread crumbs
½ cup of milk
2 tbs minced onion
1/8 tsp cayenne pepper. You can add more if your family likes it spicy.

Combine all ingredients in a bowl. Form patties and grill until done. Whole wheat buns, provolone cheese and sliced tomatoes make this burger extra special.

You can also make your potato salad more interesting by using red and white.

Dessert time again is time to involve the children. Invite them to make this wonderful red, white, and blue trifle.

Red White and Blue Trifle. 1 box white cake mix
2 packets of vanilla pudding
1 pound of strawberries, fresh or frozen
1 pound of blueberries, fresh or frozen
1 ½ cup of heavy cream, whipped.

Make cake and pudding by directions on the box.

Thaw fruit if frozen. If fruit isn’t frozen, slice into bite sized pieces and add a tsp of sugar to make juices flow.

Cut white cake into large chunks.

Using a large clear dish, place a layer of cake chunks onto the bottom of the container.

Top with a layer of strawberries

Top with a layer of pudding

Top with a layer of cake chunks

Top with a layer of blueberries

Top with a layer of pudding

Continue layering until you reach the top of your container then top with whipped cream.

The great thing about this dish is that it’s virtually foolproof and it will look amazing no matter who handles the job, your two year old or your twenty year old.

Heading Out of Town for the Fourth of July

While staying at home can be a wonderful and relaxed way to spend your holiday, several cities across the United States host top-notch Fourth of July Celebrations.

Step into our country’s heritage by visiting the following cities for their Fourth of July festivities:

Boston—Boston hosts “America’s Biggest Independence Day Party” on the Esplanade with the fireworks on the bank of the Charles River. The festivities begin on July 3rd with a Boston Pops concert and wrap up with a flyover by the Vermont National Air Guard and a spectacular fireworks show. Food, fun and fireworks, the festivities are free and you can expect to share the event with approximately 500,000 people.

Washington D.C.—There may be no better place to witness a Fourth of July spectacular than on the mall in Washington D.C. Your family can enjoy an Independence Day parade complete with floats, marching bands and giant helium balloons.

A reading of the declaration of independence can be witnessed on the Constitution avenue steps where you can meet historical figures like Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and Benjamin Franklin and you can witness the signing of the declaration of independence. Take your family to the Smithsonian for more educational fun, and don’t forget to save time for the evening concert and fireworks show.

Colonial Williamsburg—Jump back in time and visit living history as it was made. Actors walking the streets and residing in historic houses, bring to life the American Revolution. Give your children the opportunity to meet Thomas Jefferson, see how and where he lived, and view a reenactment of the signing of the declaration of independence. In addition to the military reenactment, children’s activities are provided on the palace green. Music will fill the air all day long with a variety of concerts. The fabulous holiday ends with a fireworks display.

Other wonderful places to consider visiting are:

Walt Disney World., Orlando Florida. While Disney offers fireworks every night of the year, the Fourth of July fireworks are among the best in the country.

Happy Earth Day!!

As parents we can help teach and prepare our children for what lies ahead in their lives, to show them what the values of Green Living, and learning about the earth are really all about. These Green Living Tips are targeted more to the parents than to the children, simply because the child will be at such a young age. Whatever a parent does with their kids will be as much fun for the parent as for the child.

When a parent starts teaching their children while they are young, it sets in their mind and most of the time, the things you teach them will always be with them. If you live in a rural area, and you have a garden spot, give your child a small space for them to grow something of their own. For instance, Don’t just plant vegetables, make it fun for the youngsters, let them plant things that they would like, even if it is something like gourds, or watermelons. A parent would take the time to make sort of a game with their young ones, buying some seeds, showing the child how to plant them and then taking their child outside often to check the progress of the plants. Once the plant blooms, if it is a flower, the child will get to see and smell the work that they have put into this project. If the plant was a food source, the child will get to taste the fruit of their hard work. There is not only gardening in the spring, but there are fall veggies that can be planted. You can even sit down with your children and let them help pick out the flowers and vegetables for next years garden.

This will begin to teach children responsibility and dedication to a project, which is needed in our world today. These are the basic steps for teaching our leader for tomorrow’s leaders.

As a parent, you should spend time with your child. Such as going bike riding, showing your child how to build things, how to start a project and especially how to finish it.

If a family lives in the city instead of in a rural area there are still things that can be done almost the same way. Most plants can be started and grow inside a pot and put outdoors on a terrace, or inside near a window where it will get some sunlight. You could even teach kids about the pigeons and how they came to the city, and how they survive in the city. Let the child figure out several purposes that a pigeon has in a city. You could take the children a nearby park, find an ant hill and teach them the purpose of the ants.

Reading books to them about the values of the earth and always telling them the dos and the dont's of polluting the earth. For instance, don’t throw paper or garbage of any kind on the ground, or if you pull up a tree, plant another tree somewhere else to take its place. Teach them the art of recycling things.

Teach your children to watch nature channels on TV, such as The Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, and other nature related shows. Take them outside for a walk and show them the butterflies and the bees, explain what the purpose of the small animal have in this world.

The library and the Internet is a wonderful place to learn about different animals, plants and places. Make it a fun experience to learn more about 1 endangered animal a week. Discuss why it is endangered and come up with ideas how you may help.

Giving your children small chores at home and making sure they do them will also help in building their minds, preparing them for the future. After all, cleaning up after themselves, taking care of their house, plants, yard, is the first step in taking care of the environment.

Kids watch their parents every move, so if you as a parent turn off lights that aren’t being used and saving water whenever it is possible, recycling things, your children will follow your example.

If given the support and education, young people will change the world. They could be our future conversationalist, environmentalist and humanitarians.

By helping train our children about green living, each parent will realize what their children like best and can direct them in the right path, so that later on in life they may be trained and further educated in their particular field, coming together with other such groups and developing a much more Green Lifestyle for the entire planet.

The funny thing is before you know it your kids will be teaching you. Our five year old has caught me a few times throwing things away that should have been recycled for example. Boy, have I empowered him!! And that is the key in teaching your child anything, making your children feel they can make a difference and empowering them is the most a parent can ask for. Even though I have been embarrassed a couple of times by my son correcting me, I am extremely proud of him.

It is not only our children that we should teach, but by trying to educate other adults around the world the values of Green Living, they in turn will educate their children as well. Since, it is all to true that mankind has polluted our world up to now, and we are just realizing how important it is to take care of our Earth.

Finally, here are some additional tips from the UN Environment Program to help Green Your Daily Routine.

Happy World Environment Day!!

More than likely you have heard a whole lot in the news lately about the oil spill that took place in the Gulf of Mexico. Chances are that your children have heard about it as well. This is the perfect time for you to teach your children about the importance of taking care of their environment. Most kids that hear about the BP oil spill are concerned about this problem. Instead of just allowing them to stand by and hear the bad news all the time, maybe it is time that you allow your kids to get involved. Sure, it is important that they learn as much as possible about this disaster, but giving kids a chance to do something about this problem teaches them about helping in a crisis as well as empowers them to feel that there is something that they are able to do to help out.

The great news is that even if you don't even live near the areas that have been affected by this BP oil spill, you still can help out. You don't have to be right there to take measures to help. Recent news reports are telling us that this spill is covering miles and the cost of cleanup will be in the billions. Still, there are small things that you and your kids can do to make a difference. When many parents and kids start helping, it will make a huge difference in the way this oil spill gets cleaned up.

Collect Items for the Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary

You will find that the Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary, which is in Indian Shores, is in need of some items. They need more cash than they do volunteers at this point, and there are some particular items that they need. You may want to encourage your kids to work on collecting items that are needed by this sanctuary. Perhaps organize a local drive at school or in your neighborhood to collect items need. Some of the items that Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary needs include paper towels, bottled water, toothbrushes, Gatorade, moving boxes, bleach, gas gift cards, shovels, trash bags that are heavy duty, and kennels of all sizes. You can find out more about what they need and how to get these items to the sanctuary by visiting their site at http://www.seabirdsanctuary.com/.

Donate to the National Audubon Society

Another group that is working to help cleanup the spill, especially focusing on helping birds that are victims of this spill, is the National Audubon Society. They are not only help to clean up, but trying to preserve habitats that have been affected too. Kids and adults can help volunteer with this society by filling out their volunteer forms for more information. Even if you are too far away to volunteer, you can always help by donating. Maybe hold a bake sale or have your kids pool their allowances together to make a dontation to the Audubon society to help out, which you can do by going to their website at http://www.audubon.org.

Pet and Human Hair

Helping out with the oil spill that occurred in the Gulf may be as simple as donating some hair. When you groom your pet, save all that hair that you get. It can be used to help clean up the oil spill. Both pet hair and human hair can be used to help keep the spills contained. The way it works is that hair from dogs and humans will be combined together, then put into nylons, which makes booms that are very absorbent so the spill can be contained. Check with pet salons and hair salons in your area, since they may be sending hair to the area affected. Matter of Trust is one organization that is collecting hair and you can find out more about them and this program by visiting http://www.matteroftrust.org/programs/hairmatsinfo.html.

Volunteering Opportunities

There are many volunteering opportunities out there, especially if you live near areas that are being affected by the BP oil spill. For those in Florida, there are many volunteer opportunities available and events that will require volunteers in this cleanup effort. VolunteerFlorida.org is the place to go to find out about local opportunities. Many other organizations can use volunteers as well, so if you live in the area, check with local organizations to find out if there is a way that you and your kids can volunteer to help out with this crisis.

Fundraising
Another idea is start a fundraising effort. Have your kids contact their friends, and work with other parents, or your local schools, churches and organizations.

Think Outside the Box

Brainstorm with your child on other ideas to help. Sometimes kids can have the greatest ideas! Check out this 11 year old girl who is painting to help save the Golf –> Bird Lover, 11, Painting to Save the Gulf

The great thing is that a difference can be made if everyone works together to clean up this oil spill. It is a huge disaster and is threatening more of the Gulf and may spread further to affect even more areas. If there was ever a time to work together, it is definitely now. Sure, the government is doing some work on this spill and BP has people working on the cleanup effort, but this is a big disaster that will take a lot of work and money to cleanup. Instead of sitting around hearing the gloomy news reports on the spill in the Gulf, why not take action. Let your kids learn more about taking action and helping when there is a problem. With all of these opportunities to help, you can get your kids involved, and when everyone is working together, a huge difference can be made.

Lets not forget any of them, past or present.

For many of use, Memorial Day comes and goes, we have a barbecue, shop a few sales, and enjoy the beginning of summer, while forgetting the importance of this holiday. Memorial Day was created as a day to remember fallen troops and to honor troops serving today. The last thing we want to teach our children is to take freedom and the death of American patriots for granted. This year why not take this day and spend it with your family, honoring our troops. If you are not sure what you can do with your kids to honor our troops, here are some excellent suggestions.

As a Family Observe the National Moment of Remembrance

On Memorial Day each year, there is a National Moment of Remembrance. This occurs at 3pm your local time and lasts for one minute. Observe this as a family by saying a prayer or simply having a moment of silence.

Teach Children to Display a Flag Properly

Fly the flag at your home on Memorial Day to honor the troops. This is a great time to teach your child how to display a flag properly. Teach them how they should handle a flag when raising it and lowering it.

Make Thank You Cards for Veterans

Another great idea is to make thank you cards for veterans. Check with the Veteran's Administration for some information on finding local veterans. Make up these cards to say thank you, and then send them to veterans in your area.

Visit a Veteran's Hospital

Find a Veteran's Hospital in your local area and then go on a visit. Take your children with you. Take along some cards or cookies and enjoy hearing their stories and saying thank you to these brave men and women.

Go to a Local Parade

More than likely there will be a local parade in your community to celebrate and remember the troops on Memorial Day. Consider taking your kids to the parade, wave flags, and enjoy the patriotic music as you remember together what all the brave men and women have done for this country.

Send Cards to Soldiers Currently Deployed

Another great way to honor troops with your kids is to send out cards to soldiers that are currently deployed. Many soldiers look forward to hearing from home. Kids can draw pictures or create cards to send overseas to the soldiers currently fighting.

Visit a Local War Memorial

Visiting a local war memorial is another good option to honor the troops on Memorial Day. Most communities have some type of war memorial in the area. Take your children to the memorial and talk to them about the sacrifice that has been made by many men and women in the past.

Go to a Cemetery and Place Flags on Graves of Veterans

Going to a cemetery and placing flags or flowers on the graves of veterans can be a way to honor those who have given their lives for freedom. Find out where veterans are buried and buy some flowers and flags to take with you. Let the kids place them on the graves. Just make sure you teach your children to be respectful while they are in the cemetery.

Donate to Disabled American Veterans (www.dav.org)

Donating to Disabled American Veterans, which is found at www.dav.org, is a special way to honor the troops who have been disabled after fighting for this country. Many disabled veterans deal with big challenges when they come home. Raise some money by doing a carwash as a family or selling some baked good, or simply save extra change and send it to this worthy cause to help honor the troops who have served.

Take Baked Goods to a Family That Has a Loved One Overseas

More than likely there are families in your community that have loved ones overseas. It can be difficult for families as they are missing a parent. Find a family in your area that has a parent overseas and take them baked goods as a way to honor not only the sacrifice of the soldier, but the sacrifice of the family as well.

Send Care Packages Via Operation USO Care Package

Sending a care package via Operation USO Care Package is a great way to get your kids involved in honoring and respecting the troops. You can contribute money to this cause at www.usocare.org or you can send in items for these care packages, which include disposable cameras, toiletries, sunscreen, and more. Find out more by visiting their website to see what you can do to help send these packages to the men and women who serve.

Contribute to Operation Uplink

Operation Uplink, found at http://www.operationuplink.org is another website to visit. They offer a program that allows you to contribute purchasing phone cards that are given to veterans that are hospitalized and military personnel that are overseas so they are able to call friends and family members. Save as a family and make a contribution to this great cause.

Support Military Family Members by Volunteering

You can also support military family members by volunteering your time. This can include helping a family with yard work, cleaning, house repairs, and more. Check with local organizations like the American Red Cross, Veterans of Foreign Wars, or the American legion to find out how you can volunteer and help as a family in this way.

Take Care of a Pet

If you have room for a pet at your home, take on a pet of a military person that is currently deployed. NetPets.org is a website where you can find out more about this program. It involves temporarily providing a foster home for pets while their owners are away at war. It can be fun for your whole family and will definitely be appreciated by those currently serving in the military.

These are just a few of the ways that you can honor our troops with your kids. Honoring the troops is not a matter of politics. Men and women have died in the past for freedom, and today many put their life on the line for this country. That deserves respect and honor, so use one or more of these ways to teach your children to honor the troops this Memorial Day, and every day of the year.

I have been brainstorming fun ideas we can do for the women in our lives, and the mothers of our kids. Mother's Day is coming soon, next Sunday in fact, and it's time to start thinking of great ways that we can surprise mom this year. Sure, we could buy her a gift and she'd love it, but why not go the extra mile to make her day extra special. Dad and kids can get together and work to make Mother's Day exciting and relaxing for mom. If you are stumped for some good ideas, here are some great ideas to use. Pick one or combine a couple to show mom your love and appreciation on Mother's Day.

Give Mom a Spa Day

Every mom in the world could use some time for relaxation and rejuvenation. What better place to find this than at the spa. Get together and plan out a nice spa day for mom. Have it all planned out so that she is totally free to go off and enjoy her day at the spa. Not only will she enjoy all those pampering spa treatments, but she'll enjoy having a little time to herself. When mom comes back, she'll be a brand new woman.

Plan a Picnic for the Whole Family

Keep this a secret, I am planning on this one if the weather is nice Another great way to surprise mom for Mother's Day is to plan out a picnic for the whole family. Just make sure that dad and the kids do the planning. You don't want mom to have to lift a finger to make this happen. Decide on a nice place you can go on a picnic and then get everything together – the food, drinks, blankets, and anything else you'll need. If you can, hide everything in the car and then get mom in the vehicle and keep her guessing as to where you're going. When you stop at the park and pull out everything for a picnic, she'll be surprised and excited. Serve up mom some great picnic food and she'll be sure to have a blast.

Surprise Her with Homemade Gifts

Surprising mom with homemade gifts is another wonderful idea for Mother's Day. Gifts that are home made are extra special for moms. Whether you have a tight budget or you just enjoy making things, mom is sure to love homemade gifts. There are many wonderful gifts that dad and the kids can make at home. Consider uniquely decorated picture frames to hold the kid's pictures, perhaps painting a flower pot and adding flowers, or maybe even designing a beautiful ceramic mug, painting it and adding "#1 Mom" to it. Homemade gifts are from the heart and they'll definitely touch the heart of your mom on this special day.

Plan a Family Getaway for the Day

If you really want to plan out a big surprise for mom, plan a family getaway for the entire day. In fact, you can turn it into an overnight stay. A camping trip is one option you have. Just make sure you get all the needed supplies ready to go so mom won't have to do a thing. Another idea is a getaway for a day or two at a nice vacation spot. Perhaps there's a nice vacation area a couple hours away. Book a hotel room, suite, or a cabin, and simply go away for awhile. It will get mom away from everything and she'll be surprised that you went to all the trouble to plan such a wonderful Mother's Day surprise for her.

Treat Mom to a Show

Many moms don't get out to see very many shows, so treating mom to a show is a great idea. Think about what she likes when you are choosing the type of show. Maybe she enjoys a good movie. Taking her out to the movies, complete with popcorn and nachos, is a great idea. If she's into music, try getting tickets to a music show she'll enjoy. Maybe she loves the theater. In this case tickets to an exciting play or musical may be just the thing for mom. This is sure to be an extra special gift that will make her day.

Breakfast in Bed

How many times has mom got up and made breakfast for the entire family? Well, for Mother's Day, why not return the favor. Dad and the kids can all work together to get up early, being quiet so you don't wake mom, and making a nice breakfast. If you're really quiet and sneaky, you may be able to surprise her with breakfast in bed. Mom is sure to love this luxury. She won't have to make breakfast, she can eat and relax in bed, and she'll be thrilled with this gift. Add a card or some flowers to the tray to make it even more special for her.

Clean Up the House

One of the things that no mom enjoys doing is cleaning. It can be hard to keep a home clean with a busy family. Probably one of the most surprising and exciting gifts a mom could get is a clean house. While it doesn't sound like much, if the kids and dad get together and clean the entire house, mom will not only be thrilled – she'll probably be shocked. Imagine the look on mom's face when she gets up in the morning and the house is spic and span on Mother's Day. This is a gift she won't forget and it doesn't cost you a thing except a little work and time.

You don't have to spend a lot of money to surprise mom this Mother's Day. There are many great gift ideas that are free, and others that are fairly cost effective. These are just a few great ideas for great surprises to make Mother's Day a special one. Use one of these ideas and mom is sure to remember this day for the years to come.

The show's name is "Parenthood" and the show was inspired by Parenthood, the movie, which came out some time ago. The show is an hour long, and as a parent myself, I found the idea of a movie all about parenthood to be quite intriguing. The premiere of the show just aired on Tuesday, March 2nd 2010, and what an interesting show it turned out to be.

Based upon the movie, the show is all about the ups and downs that a family goes through as they struggle through different phases of parenthood. The Braverman family is featured in this drama, which is a large family that is very imperfect and quite colorful.

The parents of the family, Zeek and Camille, have four grown children. Adam, their son is married to Kristina and they are the parents of two children, Haddie and Max. Then there is Julia who is married to Joel, and they have one daughter, Sydney. Sarah is a single mom, parent to Amber and Drew. Then there is Crosby, who is with Jasmine, although not married, and they are the parents of Jabbar.

The cast of "Parenthood" includes quite a few names that you'll definitely recognize. The matriarch of the family, Camille, is played by Bonnie Bedelia. She's known in the series as keeping the family together, but she has a great resolve that she has developed working with her children and husband, all of whom are quite willful.

Craig T. Nelson is playing the patriarch, Zeek, and as an Emmy Award winning actor, he brings a lot to the show. IN the show he was a Vietnam vet and has not stayed with anything for more than a couple years, except he has been a father for many years.

For the four children, Adam is played by Peter Krause, Julia is played by Erika Christensen, Sarah is played by Lauren Graham, and Crosby is played by Dax Shepard. Other names in the show include Joy Bryant, Sam Jaeger, Monica Potter, and Mae Whitman.

The show has the 10:00pm time slot, and it gives parents a chance to check out the show. For many viewers, especially parents, this show is show to strike a chord. Although it seems a bit typecast, the situations are definitely realistic and most will appreciate seeing life through the eyes of other parents as they go through various challenges.

The pilot show basically introduced the characters, and hopefully as the show goes on, it will continue to evolve, showing off the characters and going beyond the predictable. There are quality actors involved and great producers behind the show, so it definitely seems like a promising one.

This first episode was all about Sarah Braverman coming back home to where the rest of the family lives. She is in a tight place financially, and she has to uproot her kids and bring them with her as she moves back to Berkeley so she can be closer to the rest of the family. She's be greeted by the rest of the family, all dealing with issues of her own, and so the show begins.

After watching the pilot show, I truly hope that this show will continue to air. I'm looking forward to the next episodes and how the show progresses as we all get to know the Braverman family.

If you go to www.nbc.com/parenthood you'll find a lot of great information, videos, bios, games, and more that have to do with this new show.

The good news is that even if you missed the "Parenthood" pilot this past Tuesday, you can still see it. In fact, you can view the full episode below with your family. Clicking on the Video below will open up a movie player. You can than change it to full screen. So get the popcorn ready, gather your family around the computer and enjoy.

That very first loose tooth is something you need to celebrate when it happens to your child. It's a pretty big milestone and opens up a variety of great opportunities for you to teach kids more about dental hygiene. As that first tooth loosens, it's a sign that your child is getting a bit older and sometimes kids aren't too sure they are happy about losing their teeth. The great thing is that if you help them celebrate this time, it will help them to adjust to it and make it fun for them to embrace this new stage in their life. Not sure what you can do to celebrate their loose teeth? Here are some wonderful ideas that you can use to make it an exciting and learning event.

History of the Tooth Fairy

Of course, when children lose teeth in the United States, often they are told about the Tooth Fairy. This is an exciting fable that has been around for many years. Back in Europe, hundreds of years ago, when the baby tooth fell out, they would bury it in the ground, teaching kids that an adult tooth would then grow in it's place. Many other countries across the world had similar fables and myths surrounding the loss of baby tooth. Some felt that baby teeth needed to be buried on the grounds of the church to prevent a curse.

As people began to migrate to America, many of these superstitions and beliefs came along with them. Eventually things changed to burying teeth in small planters, and eventually this changed into having children place the tooth under a pillow where it was replaced with a coin or other treat.

Kids, being curious, wanted to know where their teeth went. This brought about the story of the Tooth Fairy removing their teeth and giving them a treat instead, and so this fable was born. Wondering what happens to those teeth the Tooth Fairy collects? Well, the story goes that all those teeth are turned into starts in the sky.

Teaching Kids Dental Hygiene

Celebrating a loose tooth is important, but it definitely is a great time for parents to introduce dental hygiene to their children. Since the subject of teeth has come up, it's a great time to start teaching kids how important keeping their teeth clean is and other important hygiene. Since children will be getting their permanent teeth, they need to learn how to properly take care of them.

Teach your children how to appropriately brush their teeth several times each day. Make it a fun game so they find it fun. Another option is to read to them. Find a good book that is about proper brushing, flossing, and dental visits. Good hygiene now will be something that is important for the rest of their life, so make it fun now since they are preoccupied with their teeth anyway.

Other Fun Celebration Ideas

There are a variety of other fun celebration ideas you can use for your children. If you teach your child about the tooth fairy, think about what you want to leave under their pillow. Many parents leave quarters, dollars, or even exciting coins from across the world. It doesn't have to be money either. Small gifts that your child will appreciate also are great items to use when replacing their lost tooth. Really want to make your kids think the Tooth Fairy came? Add a little glitter (fairy dust) under their pillow. Their eyes will be huge in the morning.

Afraid that the tooth will get lost under the pillow? Let your kids make a special tooth fairy pouch. They can use cloth to make a pouch or they can decorate a special envelope to contain that special tooth once it falls out. This is a fun way to prepare kids for losing their tooth so it seems like something exciting instead of something scary.

If your child is having a hard time eating and the tooth feels a bit painful, make it a bit easier for them by having some soft foods for them. Have a soft foods party with them and spend time talking to them about any fears they have. On the other hand, sometimes something a bit crunchy can be used to finally get that tooth to fall out.

Your child is growing up, and this is a time to celebrate. Whether you use the tooth fairy or some other method of celebrate, make sure you make it fun so kids will relax instead of being uptight about losing their first tooth.

A deep love and respect for aviation and airplanes has been pumping through my veins since I can remember. Almost my entire family has been involved in that world in some respect, whether you look at my dad, an aviation photographer, or my grandfather, who was an engineer for McDonnell Douglas. Even my sister and I, who swore we would branch out and do something different, have gotten drawn into professional jobs surrounding airplanes. Aviation has been one of the strongest, neatest bonds to experience in my family…it’s truly an interest that can span across generations and bring families together. My step dad recently passed away from leukemia, and I will always cherish that tie we shared.

My relationships with my family members have been enriched by this common interest. And the more involved I get with aviation, the more I realize just how many people are affected by it. Everyone dreams of flying when they’re a kid…airplanes make it possible. Their freedom and power strike a chord in all of us, no matter what age.

I feel like too few parents realize and expose their kids to the beauty and history behind airplanes, particularly old warbirds. To date, there are over 400 air shows in the US each year. Chances are there’s an air show near you, and a chance to introduce your kids to an important and enthralling part of history. It’s also a chance to give them something to share with other generations of their family.

Because aviation was such a huge part of my life growing up (and continues to be), it’s my hope that kids everywhere will be exposed to this wondrous world of flight. A company called Air Show Buzz (ASB.TV) has created a new animated series called “Mike DA Mustang” that is geared to get kids excited about airplanes and bringing back the thrill of flying to all ages.

“Mike DA Mustang” is an exciting and heartfelt look at the world of performance aviation. It follows the dysfunctional “family” of Mike, a P-51 Mustang, and his buddies at the airport. Mike, Buzz, Axel, Angel, Max and a host of other non-human characters give the viewer an insider view of life in the clouds—the lessons learned, the bonds formed, and the challenges faced. The dialogue is smart, the animation is great, and the lessons taught are fun and invaluable.

So please, take a few minutes to sit down with your kids and introduce them to the thrill and beauty of flight. It’s a pastime that has truly enriched my life, and I hope that it will do the same for all of you.

Blue skies, my friends.

Ah, the joys of parenting! It is the most wonderful job you will ever have. It is also the most frustrating, gross and exhausting. Take a break and enjoy a chuckle over these 50 ways that you know you’re a parent.

My kids are 15, 17 and 19 and they still freak out over number 29. Number 27 is one of my favorites too, gets me every time!

You can’t remember the last time you were able to go in the bathroom, close the door and not be interrupted.

You know the book “Goodnight Moon” – by heart.

You have actually acquired a taste for strained peas.

A full night’s sleep is a luxury – and something you haven’t had in so long you can’t even remember.

It takes you two days to shave your legs: one leg one day and the other leg the next day.

You have never been so frustrated and so in love with anyone in your life.

You are at dinner with a friend, they spill something on their shirt and you reach into your bag and pull out baby wipes to clean up.

You not only carry smiley face bandages with you, you also carry antibiotic ointment.

You have at least one story of how your child cut their own hair.

The three second rule isn’t set in stone, sometimes it’s five seconds, sometimes even more.

You realize that you are now one of those annoying people who carries a “brag book” of photos of your kids and corners unsuspecting victims with “cute” stories about your offspring.

Pregnancy and birth stories are interesting.

You have traded in your silk, wool and cashmere for the more practical cotton and polyester.

Baby talk is not reserved for just your children.

You have stayed up till 1 am making cup cakes for an entire class of first graders.

You catch yourself singing the Barney song in the shower.

When you are with friends and excuse yourself to go to the restroom you tell them you are “going potty.”

Suddenly Christmas Eve is very exciting.

Toting your little one has given you bigger biceps than you ever get at the gym.

You know how to get gum out of hair.

You can actually tell the difference between Huggies and store brand diapers.

You refer to your mother as “Grandma.”

Anytime you hear a child call for “Mommy” or “Daddy” you look around even though you know for sure that your child is nowhere around.

The last time you saw a movie that was above a G rating was…well…you can’t really remember.

You have no idea who is on “Grey’s Anatomy,” but you can name every one of the Wiggles, and you know their corresponding color.

You know exactly what to say at a goldfish’s funeral.

You have trouble concealing your knowing smirk as you listen to a first time mom-to-be talking about how things are going to be once her baby arrives.

You catch yourself watching Sponge Bob and Blue’s Clues even when the kids aren’t around.

You hear a crash in the next room and you not only know exactly what was the source of the crash, but who created it.

A child has a tantrum in the store and instead of being annoyed, you are overjoyed – because for once it isn’t your kid having the fit.

The phrase “It’s just a little throw up,” is not unusual for you to say at all.

You are “mom” to everyone, fixing ouchies, asking if they have had enough and making sure that they bundle up before going outside.

You can bathe a squirming, screaming toddler, wash their hair and dry them off in five minutes flat.

You know the emergency room nurses by their first names.

You know what a Nuk is, who Blue is and what you do with Enfamil.

You actually called all of your friends the first time your little one used the potty all by herself.

You carry the following items in your purse: baby wipes, a sandwich bag of Cheerios, antibacterial hand cleaner and theme Band-Aids.

You never thought you could worry so much.

You know well the power that a running car has over a cranky baby.

You can sleep anywhere.

You serve your husband dinner and cut his steak into little tiny pieces for him.

You realize that you sound just like your mother/father.

Not only do you know the names of all the equipment in the emergency room, you know what it is all used for.

You are very adept at talking on the phone, holding your baby, cooking dinner and writing your grocery shopping list – all at the same time.

You know the exact size of an object is to be a choking hazard.

You realize that all that parenting advice you so easily doled out when you were childless just doesn’t quite work in the real world.

You know the difference between a happy scream, a scared scream, a bored scream and a “I have just seen a spider! Kill it! Kill it!” scream.

You sing “The Clean Up” song while you are doing your housework – and all alone.

You know well the power of “Mom spit.”

You can’t believe how much space one little person can take up – in your heart.
