As a parent one of the most nerve racking experiences we have to do is find a reliable and trustworthy babysitter. Someone that we can believe will do a good job taking care of our child or children whether it is for a few hours on an as needed basis or someone the is going to care for them daily while we are working.

Here we are going to offer a number of tips for you to help you interview a potential babysitter. I recommend asking these questions whether you are looking at hiring a teenager or an adult.

First, do a prescreening call prior to setting up an interview with the potential babysitter. During this prescreening phone call you want to ask the following questions when interviewing a potential babysitter:

1. Ask their age
You have to decide what age range you are comfortable with. In my experience, you don’t want someone who is to young and inexperienced and you don’t want someone who is to old and unable to meet the demands of your child. You also want to keep in mind the age of your child/children.

2. Do they have a car?
This is important if you are planning on having them watch your child in your home.

3. What do they charge?
You want to make sure their fee falls into your budget.

4. What hours are they available?
This is important if you are looking for daily care. If they are only available until 3 and you need someone until 5 there is no point in interviewing them.

5. What references do they have?
We are all concerned about our childs safety. Make sure you ask for some references and call them. Also when talking to the references ask how often they use this individual and if they don't use her anymore, why. There are also services to help you find a babysitter that does free background checks such are care.com.

Now we are going to look at the interview. Set up a time that is convenient for everyone, I recommend having your kids at the interview. The reason for this is that kids are really a good judge of character. While most children need to warm up a little to a new person, if they aren’t comfortable through the entire interview process this is not the right person for you. Plus you really want to see how the babysitter is going to interact with your child/children.

Prior to the interview come up with a list of questions that are important to you. You might want to know the type of experience they have babysitting. Whether or not they know First Aid and CPR. Have they ever been convicted or charged of/with a felony. If you are looking at hiring an adult, I recommend doing a background check. There are services on the internet that will run a check for about $40. It may seem pricey, but these are your kids and while I like to see the good in people, I am also realistic. People lie, either because they don’t want you to know and judge them on past behavior or they are up to no good.

Ask for references of past “employers” you want both good and bad. No one is perfect and it is a true show of character if they are willing to share the contact information of someone that they didn’t have a good interaction with and you can talk to them both.

Make sure that you get all of their contact information. Name, phone number for both home and cell, home address and I would even ask for a recent photo. It is better to be safe then sorry.

During that interview you are also going to need to go over your expectations of the babysitter and make sure that they can meet those expectations.

There are really wonderful people out there that will do an exceptional job taking care of your precious little ones, take the time to find them.

Choosing a babysitter is no longer an easy task. It is important you hire an individual that can allow you the comfort of knowing that your child is being properly cared for, and one that your child will be content with. Here are some ideas you can utilize when seeking care for your child.

The choice to hire a babysitter is no longer an easy one for parents. It is no longer appropriate to simply trust just anyone with your children. It is essential that you hire an individual that can allow you the comfort of knowing that your child is being properly cared for, and one that your child will be content with. Here, you will learn about the best methods to utilize when seeking care for your child. You will also learn how to compose an effective checklist for the individual that you will eventual hire to sit with your child.

The first step to hiring an appropriate sitter is the ability to trust the individual that you select. There are numerous things that could happen while you are away, and having an individual sit with your children that is trustworthy can allow you a certain level of confidence when you are unable to be with your child. Trust can generally be established by checking references. It is imperative that you obtain a list of personal and professional references of the individual that you are considering hiring to care for your child.

There are numerous places that you can look for individuals who can fill your babysitting needs. Looking to places in the community is a great start. There are many individuals that attend church, have children that go to school with your children, in your neighborhood, and at your job that may make great babysitters for your child and/or children. You may even be able to discover youth group members, teachers, and other childcare providers to sit with your children while you are away from the home.

Once you have decided on a few individuals that you are interested in as far as your babysitting needs are concerned, you should interview each of them. You should seek out individuals that have previous experience in caring for children. You should also look for important skills, like being first aid certified and childcare training. It is also extremely important to ensure that the babysitter that you select has reliable transportation and does not have bad habits that may interfere with the proper care of your child.

Many individuals who seek babysitters for their child will require a background check. If you are able to find an affordable background check service, this is highly recommended. It is important to ensure that the potential babysitter does not have any type of violent, drug, or sex related type crime on their record. It is ideal to select only individuals that have a clean background check. This way, you can have a higher level of trust and confidence in the individual that will be caring for your child when you are not present.

Once you have elected an individual for your child care needs, it is important to ensure that you provide a detailed checklist for the babysitter. The following information should be placed on the babysitter checklist:

Your full name, address, and telephone number. You should also include the full name, and birth date of the child and/or children that the babysitter will be caring for.

If you have an emergency contact telephone number, such as a cell phone or a work number, this should also be included.

All emergency numbers, even 911, should be written down. Sometimes, in an emergency, even the simple “911” number can be difficult to recall.

You should include details about your child such as bedtimes, medication, allergies, permissible foods and beverages, and similar information.

Be certain to create a note that gives the babysitter permission to authorize any type of emergency and/or medical care that may become necessary while they are caring for the child.

Detail where the first aid kit and medication is in the home.

Provide a detailed list of any rules and/or restrictions.

By following the information contained here, hiring a babysitter can be an easy process for you and your family.

Face it, not all parents can afford to stay home with their kids. As a working parent, it very often becomes necessary to enroll your child in a daycare center. While you may be understandably a bit nervous, here are some tips for choosing a daycare provider which will help lessen some of the fears and concerns you may have.

What are the cost involved? Are there any hidden costs?

Ask where they are located and their hours of operation.

Check out the daycare centers in your area, either on line or by calling.

Find out if there are any vacant spots so you can enroll your child.

Do they supply meals or snacks to the kids?.

Ensure the daycare provider is licensed. Many times you can check with the state, and a lot of states have this information on the Internet.

Ask how many children are currently enrolled in the center, and their ages.

Did you know some states do inspections and post those inspections on the internet? If you have internet access check it out.

Ask for references or other parents you can talk to.

After you have asked these quesitons, you are not done. It is very important to visit the daycare center and check on, and ask the following:

Are the children actively engaged in activities?

Is it clean and safe? Is the ratio of caregiver to child appropriate?

Are there enough toys and materials with which the caregiver is able to engage the children in activities?

Do the children seem happy and are being taken care of individually.

How do the caregivers talk to the children? Are they warm and friendly?

Ask the administrator to give you background information on the staff. Are they licensed in this particular area?

Does the center have exits which are readily available to use in case of an emergency.

Ensure these caregivers have been trained and have the proper credentials.

The final step is first hand inspections. Visit several daycare providers during the early morning hours. Determine which center provides the best care and treatment of your child, and has plenty of activities and materials to keep your child active and focused. Then choose accordingly.

The other alternative is to choose a daycare provider to come to your home. This may produce another set of problems, especially if you bring in a family member. You need to weight your options carefully, and decide which is more affordable and better choice for you and your child. Research, talk to other moms, and network. You can't be too cautious, this will be one of the first major decisions you have to make for your child.
