by Stacey Schifferdecker

Does it seem like kids’ birthday parties are getting a little more extravagant every year? My daughter recently went to a party that featured two bounce toys and two clowns doing face painting and balloon animals, plus a craft table, a piñata, and goodie bags. The latest trend in my son’s class is to rent the entire skating rink for a couple hours.

Of course, the kids have fun at these parties and if the parents can afford a big, expensive party, they have every right to throw one. But those of us who can’t afford to spend hundred of dollars on a birthday party can still throw affordable parties that are fun for everyone.

Set a Budget – and Stick to It
Your first step in keeping a birthday party affordable is to decide how much you want to spend. Don’t be tempted into a “My child’s birthday party must be the biggest and best” competition. If your child wants something for the party that will break the budget, tell him or her they have to drop something else.

Stay at Home
You don’t have to rent a skating rink or a room at a pizza place to have a fun party. In fact, if you have a party at a pizza place or bounce house, the kids tend to spend their time playing with the stuff instead of interacting with each other. They can have a great time playing in your back yard

If you truly don’t want to have your child’s birthday party in your home, explore other inexpensive options, such as a park or your church. We have had several birthday parties in our church gym, and it is great because there is plenty of room for the kids to run around, as well as a playground right outside the door.

Limit the Guest List
You really don’t need to invite everyone in your child’s class, as well as all their neighborhood friends, cousins, and the kid they met at the pool last week. One suggestion I have read is to invite the same number of guests as your child’s age – so a five-year-old would have five guests. I always found that a bit too limiting, but definitely keep the guest list at a number you are comfortable with and that includes your child’s true friends.

Of course, you don’t want anyone to feel out, so mail invitations rather than handing them out at school, and teach your children not to talk about their parties when they are around children who aren’t invited.

Keep it Simple
Kids really don’t need professional entertainers or rented equipment to have a good time. One year the favorite game at my son’s Spy Party was looking for the bomb (a kitchen timer) before it exploded (dinged). The kids wanted to play over and over again. Another year, we timed a Construction Party around the arrival of a load of dirt for the garden. The kids had a grand, dirty time pushing toy cars round the dirt pile.

Let your child pick a theme and then plan some simple games and crafts to go along with it. The internet is full of party ideas you can borrow. Just don’t sweat it if the kids don’t want to play your games. If they’re having fun just playing tag in the backyard, then let them!

Friends, fun, and cake and ice cream – what more does a birthday party need?

The children’s birthday party circuit can get downright expensive, especially if you have a couple kids being invited to birthday parties. But you can give great and creative birthday presents without breaking your budget. Try these ideas...

The children’s birthday party circuit can get downright expensive, especially if you have a couple kids being invited to birthday parties. But you can give great and creative birthday presents without breaking your budget.

Stock a Closet

The top shelf in our linen closet is the gift shelf. I keep it stocked with books, art supplies, toys, and other gifts bought on sale throughout the year. When an invitation to a birthday party arrives, the first place we shop is the gift shelf.

Set a Budget

If you end up at the toy store, your sweet, generous kids are bound to pick out the $50 box of Legos or the $80 Barbie dream home. Tell them up front what your budget is and then steer them to items within that range.

It may sound tacky, but my budget changes depending on how close my child is to the birthday child. For a best friend, we might spend up to $20, while for a classmate with whom my child doesn’t play outside of school, the budget is $10 or less. And yes, you really can get a fun present for $10 or less, such as

Sidewalk chalk

Hot wheels cars

Art supplies

Magazine subscriptions

Sand toys

Water toys (you can get great deals at the end of summer)

Flashlights

Beauty supplies (hair items, lip gloss, fingernail polish, etc.)

Books

Ask for Ideas

There is nothing wrong with asking a child’s parents for ideas on what their child might like. One year, I learned that one of my son’s friends really like to play office, so we bought office supplies for his birthday. He loved them, and I never would have thought of such an unusual gift without asking his mother.

Go for the Gift Card

You may think gift cards are dull and show a lack of creativity, but kids love getting them as much as adults do. Gift cards are especially great for teens, whose “toys” tend to be more expensive: A teenager who is saving to buy a new computer, MP3 player, or game system will love getting a gift card to an electronic store. It’s even better when a group of friends conspire together to all get cards from the same store, so the birthday child can buy the big-ticket item he or she has been yearning for.

Personalized Gifts

Finally, you might want to give your child a real keepsake. If you have not checked out our selection of personalized gifts at www.more4kids.com you are in for a treat. For less than $20 you can get your child a personalized book or a personalized music CD. Both types of gifts feature your child's name throughout the story, or sung in the song. As well as being fun, they are educational and help build self-esteem.

With a little planning ahead and creative thought, you won’t need to dread the next birthday party invitation that comes in the mail!

Every party needs fun games. Summer seems to have a lot of birthday parties. I wonder if it is because of the cold winters? I have brainstormed some of my favorite games from childhood. Here is a list my favorites. Enjoy, and if you have any fun ideas click here to leave a comment and tell us your favorites.

Crazy Faces: Mess factor: 0
Suitable age: Pre-teen and younger
Supplies needed: disposable cameras or digital cameras

Directions: Let kids take turns snapping pictures of each other making crazy faces. The object of this game is to see who can make the craziest face. Kids can take a vote and give a prize to the craziest face.

Pass the Egg: Mess factor: 10
Suitable age: All ages
Supplies needed: eggs, spoons

Directions: Group kids into pairs. Place one egg on a spoon, and then have a child to place the end of the spoon between their teeth. One child walks halfway to the finish line, and then passes the egg (from one spoon to the other) to their partner’s spoon. The partner then attempts to reach the finish line without breaking the egg. The object of this game is for partners to successfully pass the egg from one spoon to another and reach the finish line without splattering the egg everywhere.

Side note: This game is best played outdoors because of the mess factor.

Silly Story: Mess factor: 0
Suitable ages: Younger children
Supplies needed: articles of clothing, odd accessories (costume jewelry, floppy hats, etc.)

Directions: Sit kids in a circle. Make a pile of the story-telling items in the center of the circle. The first child starts the silly story by selecting a piece of clothing or an accessory from the pile. She puts it on, then makes up a silly story line. Example: A child might say something like, “Suzie needed a gallon of milk, but her hair was too short so she put a hat on her head.” While saying this, the child places a hat on her head. The next child follows in suit, choosing something from the clothing pile and putting it on while adding to the story. The story continues in the circle until every dress-up item is used and the story has ended. The object of this game is to have fun making up a silly story and dressing up.

Shave the balloon: Mess factor: 10
Suitable ages: Pre-teens or teens
Supplies needed: balloons, shaving cream, disposable razors, and newspapers (optional)

Directions: Blow up balloons before party time. Spread shaving cream all over a balloon. Let kids take turns “shaving” a balloon. The object of this game is to shave your balloon completely without popping it.

Side note: This game should be played outdoors because of the mess factor. If playing indoors, spread newspaper on the floor before you begin.

More Fun Ideas for Outdoor Kid Party Games

Summer is here and if you have a party more than likely there will be some outdoor activities. Here are some ideas Kids love playing outdoors. What better way to make a party fun, than to plan some fun outdoor party games! Here are some ideas to get you started:

THREE-LEGGED RACE
Pair off children and tie their right and left legs together. Race from one end of the yard to the other. The team that makes it to the end of the yard first wins the race.

JUMP ROPE CONTEST
Take turns racing, while jumping rope, from a beginning to ending marker. The child that reaches the end first without falling wins.

YARD SPRINKLER
Many department stores carry fun sprinklers that you can attach to your garden hose. These are always a huge hit for outdoor kid parties. Just screw the sprinkler into the end of the hose, set it in the middle of your yard, and let the kids have fun running through the water.

BADMINTON
Just about every kid loves badminton. Set up a net and separate kids into teams for a fun game of badminton. Play quick matches of 15 points, then mix up the teams and start all over again.

WATERMELON SEED-SPITTING CONTEST
Cut big slices of watermelon and pass out to all the kids. See who can spit their watermelon seeds the farthest.

CRAFTS AND PICTURE PAINTINGFor something different, try crafts or picture painting and hold a contest for the best picture or craft.

WATER BALLOON TOSS
This is another fun outdoor game for kids. After running through the yard sprinkler, have water balloons ready to go. Group kids together in pairs. Let them take turns tossing the balloons to each other from a distance. The pair that ends up with the remaining water balloon in tact wins.

While many people think they would envy a birthday around the holidays, many times the birthday child gets overlooked. Whether you celebrate Christmas or Hanukah or any other holiday, it is important to make this December birthday a special time for your child.

This month, families get together to celebrate the birth of a Savior, a very big event which often overshadows another VERY big event in the eyes and hearts of a child.
THEIR BIRTHDAY!

When I was a child, kids used to envy me having my birthday in the month that everyone gets presents- “You must get a lot of them!” was the common outcry from my friends when they heard my birthday was December 10. But it was usually far from the celebration that I wished that I had considering that the change in my parent’s pockets only went so far with four girls presents to buy for Christmas. Having this personal experience, I know what makes (or breaks) a very special December birthday!

CAKE- Regardless of how much you might not want to get your child a special cake, do it. Make sure it doesn’t have Santa Claus on top or poinsettias. I absolutely HATED the year my mom not only got a cake with POINSETTIAS but also combined my sister’s birthday and mine proclaiming HAPPY BIRTHDAY SHELLY AND HOLLY!! (Holly’s birthday fell four days after mine on December 14th). If your child’s birthday falls on Christmas, stifle the urge to have “HAPPY BIRTHDAY JESUS AND (your child’s name).” While you may think this is special, it isn’t to your child. Serving their cake at a special time of day either in the morning or the evening making it a special time separate from the family Christmas is also good. If your child agrees, celebrate the day after Christmas or day before- but make sure that YOUR CHILD AGREES and that you are not pushing the idea!

PRESENTS- Again, do not save money by combining their gifts telling them that they actually get more this way! Even if you do spend more on a gift if their birthday is on Christmas feeling that your child is shortchanged somewhat, make sure that all gifts that are being opened are designated for SEPARATE occasions! Do not wrap their gifts in Christmas paper!! I still remember how my gifts were donned in reindeers and Santa- I would have loved Barbie paper or something other than red and green colored wrappings! Have the gift unwrapping during a special time as well along with the cake- not during the time everyone unwraps if their birthday falls on Christmas Setting up a special decorated table with a small birthday tree is a great idea to set apart your child’s birthday presents from the Christmas loot. Make sure that you get photos of the child alone while they unwrap gifts- kids love seeing pictures of their birthdays and would not appreciate the photos to include everyone holding their gifts as well. It is THEIR birthday!

PARTIES- No combination celebrations no matter how hard you want to save time and effort. Your child’s birthday is a special day, set apart from the others in his or her mind and it is neither a Christmas Open House nor a Hanukah gathering. If you have your child’s friends included in the celebration, be sure to plan far ahead. Kid’s party places such as Chuck E Cheese book up quickly during holiday breaks. If you decorate for a December party at home, USE BIRTHDAY DECORATIONS not holiday ones! Choose what colors they like and what theme they enjoy even if it clashes with whatever you have already put up in your house! Remember, you can always “undecorate” when the party is over but you can’t erase memories of a “Christmas themed” birthday!

Sitting here on Thanksgiving I am thinking about all I have to be grateful for. While my health is much to be desired, God has blessed me with a great family. A Mother I love dearly, a sister and her family, and my own family. Thinking about some of the special times with my own family I dug up some pictures of my sons first birthday. I can't believe it was only 3 and a half years ago. Time really flys!

Continued from Part 1

Invitations

There are so many choices when it comes to invitations. A nice alternative to buying them is to make your own and involve your child. If your child is old enough, he can decorate and write out the invitation with some help from you. Don’t worry if it’s not perfect – it’s a kid’s party invitation, right? There are also some great websites that give you step-by-step instructions on how to create your own party invitations. Check out: www.bestkidsbirthdayparties.com and www.todaysparent.com.

Location

Selecting the right location is critical to a successful birthday party. Start by thinking about whether your party will be held at home or somewhere else. There are advantages and disadvantages to having the ever-popular home party. Although a home party may seem convenient, be prepared to spend a lot of time preparing your place for the party and cleaning up afterwards.

If you’re having the party at home, will it be indoors or outside? When planning an outdoor party, always have Plan B worked out in case of rain. I will never forget my six year old’s backyard birthday party and the thunderstorm that struck just when we were about to cut the cake. Needless to say, we had made arrangements to accommodate everyone inside, so our planning beforehand saved the day.

If you’re considering a party elsewhere, there are a lot of great venues ranging from the local zoo, museums, kid-friendly restaurants, community swimming pool, local gymnastics centre, amusement parks, bowling, mini-golf, a movie, and much more. Many places have affordable birthday packages that can take the stress out of planning the special day. Check your community’s guide to local attractions for some kid-friendly ideas.

Theme

What’s your child interested in? You probably know best what your child likes, so involve her in selecting a theme. Children as young as two can tell you what characters they like and can get really involved in the planning process!

There are so many themes and characters to choose from and it’s easy to get overwhelmed. When you decide on your theme, try to keep the rest of the planning simple – that is, matching the invitations, balloons, decorations, cake, paper plates, cups, napkins, and a few activities is probably all that’s needed.

For party theme ideas for all ages, check out www.birthdayexpress.com, www.orientaltrading.com and www.todaysparent.com.

Games

Games are a must for any great home party. Tried and tested games include: musical chairs, ring toss, freeze dance, pin the tail on the donkey (or theme character), pass the parcel, or even a treasure hunt. Have prizes for the winner, or for everyone, if you wish. If you can find a clown, magician, or theme character, they’re sure to have games and activities that will keep the kids entertained. This is a good option that takes the pressure off of managing the entire party yourself. More game ideas can be found at www.birthdayexpress.com and www.todaysparent.com.

If your child enjoys crafts, you can have the guests complete a small craft project (such as decorating their place mat, creating a party hat, beading a necklace, or making finger puppets). A craft is a cool keepsake for the guests to remember to occasion.

Food

Every great party has great food! If you’re having a home party, some popular ideas are: chips, veggies with dip, cheese and crackers, pizza, small sandwiches, meat and cheese platters with an assortment of rolls and breads for make-your-own sandwiches, pizza, BBQ burgers and hotdogs, pasta and salads. Also, try to have an assortment of juices and soda pop available. If adults are also invited, it’s always appreciated if there are a few munchies for them too. If you have a lot of guests, consider catering if it fits your budget.

The Cake. Will you make it at home or will you buy it? Do you want the cake to reflect your party theme? Maybe you could opt for cupcakes – pre-decorated or you could have the guests decorate their own. And don’t forget the ice cream!

Party bags

Your little guests will be thrilled to receive goodie bags when leaving. Fill them with age appropriate treats, favors and nifty trinkets.

Thank You Notes

As with the invitations, you can create your own thank you notes, buy them to match your party theme, or find some ideas online (see the websites listed above). Mail or hand-deliver them a few days after the party, or include them in the party bags.

Things to Remember

Camera and video camera – make sure you have enough film and that all equipment is working. Stock up on extra batteries.

Music – really important if the kids will be dancing! Have a good selection on hand.

Candles – yes, it’s happened where parents remember everything except to buy candles for the birthday cake. Make sure this doesn’t happen to you.

The Family Pet – even the most well-behaved pet can become unpredictable in a home full of noisy children, not to mention that guests may be afraid of pets or have allergies. Consider confining your pet for the festivities.

Special Considerations

Baby’s First Birthday

Your child’s first birthday is an exciting milestone. To ensure it’s a party to remember, keep everything about the party simple. Invite a few guests, keep the decorations and entertainment minimal and have just a few balloons (remember that little ones can choke on the pieces of popped balloons). Too many people, balloons, and loud music can frighten your child. Schedule the party before or after your baby has napped to ensure she’s well-rested for the festivities. And you may want to feed her beforehand because the excitement of the party may diminish her appetite.

Toddler Parties

Toddler parties are best planned around the four “S’s”: small, simple, sensible and short. Keep the guest list small – perhaps primarily adults your child knows and a couple of playmates. Go easy on the decorations as tiny tots tend to frighten easily. Be sensible when it comes to food and avoid grapes, small pretzels or popcorn which can cause choking. Keep the party short and sweet – one to one-and-a-half hours is plenty and schedule it to accommodate your toddler’s routine. And, open gifts after the party – sharing can be challenging at this age.

Young Children

When deciding on your party menu, keep in mind that many children have food allergies. Ask parents ahead of time if there are any food restrictions you need to be aware of. If children are being dropped off for the party, make sure you know where to reach the parent in the event of an emergency.

The Big Day

If you’ve gone through this party planner, you should be relaxed and well-organized when the big day arrives. You may even be as excited as your child and can hardly wait for the party to begin! After all, this is a monumental day in the life of your child. Enjoy the celebration, keep your sense of humour, have fun and create memories that you’ll cherish forever.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year … and no, it’s not Christmas. It’s little Ashley’s or little Brendan’s birthday. And it’s crept up on you faster than you expected. Maybe you’re lucky and have a month to go before the big day, or perhaps you have just a few days. Nevertheless, your kid has begun the count down and has been relentlessly asking “Can I have a party, phuleeeeeese?!

So what’s a parent to do? If you decide to have THE party, how do you ensure it’s THE BEST party ever – one that’s a great hit with the kids and not a great hit on your wallet – while keeping your sanity in tact. Here’s a handy party planner that will help make the big celebration fun, original, memorable, affordable, and stress-free.

Kids Party Ideas

General Considerations

Date
Select a date and time that’s most convenient to you and the guests. When choosing the date, think about when your guests will be most likely to come. Check the calendar for important events or holidays that may come into conflict.

Timing is everything. Examine your child’s needs – for example, if you’ve got a toddler, it’s probably a good idea to schedule the party around afternoon nap times: late mornings can be the perfect time. Also think about the time the party will finish. This will depend on how long you think the children can go without getting fussy. As a general guideline, for young children, 1 ½ or 2 hours is probably adequate.

Guest List
How many kids do you invite? The general rule of thumb is to invite the number of guests for every year of your child’s age, for example, if your child is turning five, invite five guests. However, if you and your child feel comfortable having more (or less), that’s ok too.

Are you extending invitations to parents, or would you prefer they drop off their child for the party and pick them up later? If you’re having very young guests, parents will likely stay for the duration of the party.

Budget
How much do you want to spend on the big celebration? How much can you afford? Determining your budget is crucial at the start of your party planning. As you work your way through this party planner and BEFORE you spend any money, make a list of the things you will need and estimate how much they will cost. A little planning will ensure your party stays on track of what you can actually afford.
