What a great blog post. I, too, have written letters to my childen, even about everyday mundane things, and they love them, responding with a letter. I think it's a great way to open communication between parent and child.

Great article - Gifts from the heart are the best! I just spent the month of August with my family. It was just me and my 5 year old princess - Daddy had to stay home and work!
My daughter met some of her cousins for the first time - it was a wonderful experience for her! One of my cousins (she is over 60) really took a liking to my daughter. At one of the family dinners she started to kindly tease and break the ice with my daughter, by the end of our trip they were laughing together. The last visit we had with her, she called my daughter over to the car and pulled out a huge tote bag full of little gifts (anything from crayola marker sets, ponytail holders in hundreds of colors and types, reading books, skipping ropes, funky tooth brushes, all sorts of amazing little gifts for a five year old) But as my cousin was presenting her with the gift she said "MJ inside is a letter to you, your mommy must read it to you before you open the rest of the bag" Back at my mom's place - we took out the letter and I read it to her. She wrote the letter as if she was curled up on the couch beside MJ talking to her. She wrote in her letter how it was such a special summer for her because she got to know MJ and how special of a girl MJ is! She went on and then asked her in the Letter if "MJ do you know what a promise is?" explained what a promise is and then asked MJ to promise her to visit next summer. She promised her that she would spend time with her, go to the pool with her , watch movies with her and of course curl up on the couch and talk and also have a yummy bowl of icecream together!
My daughter was mezmorized by the letter! She asked me to read it over and over again. She now knows it off by heart! In fact the letter is on her drawer top and the bag of goodies is basically in the play room. the letter has so much meaning to her. A simple letter - written from the heart to a 5 year old!
What a great gift!
